My Favorite Baby Carriers
When I was pregnant with Wolf, I searched high and low to find the perfect baby carrier. I’d heard from lots of parents that it just would depend on what the baby liked. My good friend tried 5 different carriers with her daughter until she finally found the perfect one so I expected our baby carrier journey to be a challenge.
When Wolf was just a few days old, we decided to try out our first carrier. We’d purchased the Moby wrap in black and after tying, wrapping and re-wrapping the fabric, we initially gave up. He just seemed so small and I was terrified that he’d stop breathing. I wore it around the house for about 10 minutes, constantly checking his neck to make sure it was aligned correctly and then finally decided to take it off. So for those first few weeks we stuck to the bassinet on our stroller. But I was determined to carry Wolf!
Now that he’s 3 months old, we’ve pretty much found what works for us and Wolf.
My favorite: The Ergo.
I love that Wolf can snuggle up against my chest and fall asleep, which he does most every time I put him in it. It’s perfect for long walks because the weight is distributed evenly and he’s shaded for the most part from the sun. I just make sure his little legs and feet are covered and we’re good to go! We love taking Wolf on hikes and The Ergo is perfect for that! The only downside to The Ergo is that he can’t face forward. When Wolf is awake, he wants to look out. I didn’t realize upon purchasing The Ergo that he wouldn’t be able to face forward and Wolf likes to see the world. I’m sure once he gets bigger and his head actually peeks out from above the carrier, he’ll love it. And I’m sure he’ll especially love when I can put him on my back!
The best for multi-tasking: The Moby or any fabric wrap.
Many, many MANY times during the day, Wolf just wants to hang with me so I’ve taken to putting him in the Moby while I’m working/eating/cleaning/etc. and he’s content for about 20-30 mins. He’s able to face forward which is pretty cool because he can watch me work! I think at his age right now, he’s so interested in what’s going on around him and just wants to explore. Since he’s not mobile yet, exploration comes with hanging out with Mom and Dad. The downside of the Moby is that it seems to take me forever to get the thing on. I’m sure with more practice I’ll be a pro at whipping those 6 yards of fabric around me. But for now it works.

Jodymo commented on Aug 29 11 at 2:12 pmergo hands down – what other carrier can handle my 4 month old son as well as my 3 year old daughter – granted not at the same time ;)
Kelsey commented on Aug 29 11 at 2:13 pmI also love the Ergo and was bummed that my boy couldn’t face out. But we’ve recently discovered the hip carry position, and it’s a good compromise! He can see what’s in front of us, and it’s also not as hot and sweaty as a tummy-to-tummy situation in warmer weather. You should try it. I watched the instructional video on the ergo baby website and I was sold!

Maggie commented on Aug 29 11 at 3:53 pmi loooove my Baby K’tan. like a wrap, but easier to use.
Meagan commented on Aug 29 11 at 4:10 pm@Kelsey Is there an age/size requirement for the side carry? I love my Ergo but my baby’s legs don’t go out the sides yet.
@Alyson Did you have the infant insert? It has a butt pillow on the bottom that you can take out once they outgrow the insert… then stick it under their butt so they sit a little higher in the carrier until they get bigger.
Bonnie commented on Aug 29 11 at 6:58 pmWe loved our K’tan when my baby was littler too, and we use the Ergo every day. I also recently discovered the Beco Gemini, which is almost exactly like the Ergo except that there is an adjustment which allows you to wear the baby forward facing. It isn’t as comfortable or good for the baby as facing inward, but it’s great for quick grocery trips or using around the house when he wants to look around. I don’t know how I would have survived the first six months of motherhood without our carriers!
Steph commented on Aug 29 11 at 7:03 pmI didn’t try the Moby or Ergo – partly because I live in a place where it’s difficult (and expensive) to buy specific things, and also because it’s tropical I thought those carriers looked hot. I got a Maya Wrap and I love it. It’s a ring sling and so nice and snuggly for little babies and supports bigger babies on your hip, where you naturally carry them, but gives you more support and both hands free! It’s also not too warm for those living in hot places.
Kelsey commented on Aug 29 11 at 9:17 pm@Meagan – I think the requirement was for the baby to hold his head up and stick his legs out the sides and around your waist. The website says 4-6 months. Here is the video :)

Jessica commented on Aug 29 11 at 9:23 pmI love the Bjorn for our 1 month old, because it’s super easy to take off and on, and he’s well-positioned in there. He totally conks out as soon as we put him in it. I didn’t love the Moby because 1) all that fabric plus a baby in August=hotter than hell, and 2) like you, I just don’t feel that an infant is very well-positioned in there. I’m constantly checking to be sure he’s breathing. Plus, for being out and about, if you’re going to drive somewhere and then do the Moby, you pretty much have to accept dragging the fabric across the ground/dirt/parking lot to get it on because it’s SO MUCH FABRIC. I’m looking forward to my guy being big enough for the Ergo; and I love how soft/ plush it feels.
Kate commented on Aug 29 11 at 11:24 pmI loved the Moby when my guy was little. Now I like the Infantino Eco Sash, ’cause I’m too cheap (read: poor, lol) for the Ergo, or Beco, etc. My favourite, and my 7 month old son’s as well, is a good old fashioned sling. We’re looking for a good ring sling right now.
Marie commented on Aug 29 11 at 11:25 pmErgo all the way. My kid has gone to the state fair three years and on 3 university tours in it (so 8+ hours of walking each time), over the past 2.5 years (she’s now 3.5 years old, 35ish lbs), been worn by me and the spouse, including shortly after I broke my ankle and she needed ME to carry her all the time, and it still works well. We liked the Baby Bjorn all right when she was tiny, but it wasn’t comfy enough for her for very long and we got the Ergo and it’s worlds more comfy for the parent.
Tera commented on Aug 30 11 at 11:30 amBaby K’tan for first 5 months hands down (it is basically a Moby wrap for dummies! and so much easier!!) and then Ergo for like 6 months and up hands down! Both i think are staple items for a mom!
K commented on Aug 30 11 at 11:36 amI’m a baby wearing addict… I like the fitted pouch sling for a hip carry, when she wants to face out and look around. Backpack carry in a mei tai for laundry and cooking. Long days out I prefer the Beco Gemini, where she can nap the longest. I have an airy cotton gauze wrap for super hot days, and it folds up really small for travel. (And I just ordered rings to make a ring sling… I have a problem, I tell ya.)
Sarah Myers commented on Aug 30 11 at 11:00 pmBeco Gemini hands down. She’s 13 months and we still baby wear. In the beginning she liked to face forward. But around 8-9 months she got too big for that position and we were both more comfortable with her facing me. I also find it easy to nurse in, a huge plus.
Edie22 commented on Sep 13 11 at 5:31 pmI tried one very similar to the bjorn and another hats a sling and in the end my daughter ended up loving a $3 scarf that I use as a hip sling. I can adjust it so she’s either supportin herself or so it goes up over he shoulders if she’s fallen asleep. I can also slide her so she’s almost in front of me for a cuddle. I also put the fabric over my shoulder so the weight isn’t pulling on my neck.
I wasted so much money on carriers and love using the scarf. We’re both comfortable for hours too! I didn’t try his until she was 4 months though so no idea how I would be with smaller babies.
