6 192x300 Best Movies For Little BoysA few weeks back I received an email from a reader, requesting a post on our favorite classic Disney movies for little boys.

Now, Huck doesn’t watch a whole lot of TV, primarily because we don’t have cable. (Though the two weeks we spent in Portland he got himself a healthy dose of Fox News. Luckily, I think he is still capable of rational thought. Badumching!)

But one thing we do take very seriously is our love of Disney movies, and we are currently in rigorous training for Huck’s first visit to Disneyland next year. I have one in the DVD player at all times. We generally watch a movie twenty-minute snippets. While I’m getting ready in the morning, on it goes. While we’re killing time before bedtime, on it goes. That sort of thing. It usually takes us a couple of days to actually finish a movie (unless I decide to leave it on while Huck is napping–hey, I like these movies, okay?). Let’s face it, at ten months old, Huck doesn’t have the attention span for a whole movie (nor would I feel good about letting him zone out to a whole movie just yet) (maybe when he’s older and more obnoxious) (kidding!).

And as much as I like to believe that the classics are gender neutral, whether the lead character is a princess or not, I will admit to choosing “boy” movies for Huck more often than not. But I’m particular. I want old fashioned. No violence. No obnoxious bathroom jokes. No loud computer “animation.”

So, what are the best movies for capturing the attention of a little dude like mine when you just need twenty minutes or so to finish up something (or get your mascara on) and you do NOT want to watch Cars or Nemo or The Incredibles again?

After the jump!

8 Best Movies For Little Boys

LADY AND THE TRAMP
What little boy doesn't love a furry puppy? And what better role models can you get than Jock and Trusty?

Honorable Mentions: Robin Hood (with the foxes!), The Lion King, Aladdin, and The Rescuers.

Not Selected For Frightening And/Or Depressing Scenes: Pinnochio, and Dumbo. I mean, really.

Honorable Non Disney Mentions: The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Good one!

What about you? What are your favorite go-to cartoons for little boys?

When my son gets a little older (he’s only one now), I want to try and find the classic Disney cartoons with Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, etc. on DVD. When my mom would take me to the video rental place when I was little, I’d always get those videos. I hope you can get some of the classic shorts as part of a collection DVD now.

I remember Peter Pan fondly as well. But my kids were gifted the storybook of the Disney version and I was a little surprised at the violence and, particularly, by the stereotypical portrayal of Native Americans. I really consider myself to be sort of “free range” when it comes to parenting, but I felt this film just wasn’t appropriate for my young kids (ages 4 and 2). Something to consider…

As a frazzled mother myself, I am all about pluggin’ them in for a quick shower, etc. My little guys love Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and recently discovered Tarzan (another good one for boys). And I am loving all your recommendations!

Just in case it does not get mentioned…NEVER EVER NEVER EVER LET YOUR CHILD REGARDLESS OF GENDER WATCH ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN. I believe my parents still have the copy and I am going to burn it in. Literally, set it on fire. As a former little boy/current man-boy, the list is great.

Lady and the Tramp was my family’s favorite Disney movie growing up! My sister would ask us to put in “a boo night” (which meant “a blue night” and referenced the opening song). So glad to hear your little family loves it too! A very cute and heroic story. Now I need to re-watch it.

Okay…there’s ideal parenting, and then there’s reality parenting. And reality parenting in THIS house means one-year-old Tamsin has watched some TV with her big sis. AND THAT’S OKAY.

In other news, I heart all of your picks!!! Disney brings a tear to my eye…even at 29. We’re going to Disneyland with Karl’s family and my parents this October for a Taylor family vacation/celebration of Jim’s birthday/my parents’ 20th anniversary (Disneyland + Halloween + The Nightmare Before Christmas = Megan and Jim’s wildest dreams!). I loooove Disney’s “Peter Pan” (minus the mortifying “What Makes the Red Man Red?” song, which pricks my granola Portland roots something fierce). At our house, though, “101 Dalmations” is currently reigning supreme (Camryn found a dalmation puppy toy at the local DI…that’s how it starts, friends!). I also love Don Bluth’s “American Tail” and “Fievel Goes West” (even better perhaps?), as well as “Anastasia” (Dmitri is HOTTTTT!) but they might be a bit dark for the wee ones.

And I must report that the ten minutes of the new “Winnie the Poo” movie I saw in the theater were pure delight. The rest of the movie was spent with cranky, non-compliant Tamsin in the lobby, where I worked my hardest not to feel bitter about missing my oldest girl’s first trip to the cinema and failed. MY first trip to the cinema was to see “The Great Mouse Detective.” Excellent choice, I must say.

when my older brother was little, he would watch aladdin every.single.day. no lie. i don’t know if it was some sort of extreme short term memory loss thing, but he legitly was entertained every single day. i always loved casper (cristina ricci one), but i think i was a little older when i was going through that phase :)

I just bought The Sword in the Stone the other day (at Costco for only $7!) and I think it’s the perfect boy movie. There isn’t any romance in it (except when he’s a squirrel) so boys can relate. It’s one of my favs along with Robin Hood (with the foxes).

robin hood with the foxes…the best. we watched fantastia a lot when my son was under 18 months…the music was soft and it had a lot of colors and movement so he would watch it happily while i got ready or whatever.

btw why Disneyland and not World?
