Babies Don’t Keep, Dirty Toilets Do. Trust Me on This One.
I am going to go ahead and congratulate myself right now and say “Good job enjoying your baby, Casey!” If there’s one thing I knew going into this parenting gig the second time around it was that babies don’t keep, which is part of the reason I’ve been living in somewhat organized chaos over the last 14 weeks. I have the teenage years to scrub toilets and read novels, you know, when they despise my existence and want nothing to do with me.
When I looked into hiring a newborn photographer all of them said “Session must take place within the first ten days of life.” Ten days? Sheesh, in a rush much? Due to complications with Vivi during her first few weeks of life I was unable to have the newborn session I wanted to (thankfully I know how to snap a decent picture myself) but the thing that stood out to me the most?
Newborns expire after 10 days.
The previously squishy squashy baby that I knew suddenly became stronger and less bendy on the 11th day.
My grandma scolded me with my first baby that I held her too much, that I would spoil her rotten, then my mother in law pulled me aside and said “You can never love a baby too much.” Wise words mother of my husband.
Vivi is already trying to roll over, sit up and pull my hair. These days of her being content to just sit in my arms and let me play with her are numbered. Which means all that “stuff” I have to do that really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things?
Can totally wait.

[...] trust you, it’s more of an “anything you can do I can do better” type of thing. I just really, REALLY like this baby, I have a hard time leaving her, especially with strangers or anyone who doesn’t think [...]

Stephanie Precourt commented on Aug 19 11 at 5:28 pmThey totally can. I’m actually rocking ivy (almost 3!), sleeping in my arms. I am milking this as long as possible. ;)
Jeanne commented on Aug 19 11 at 8:26 pmJohn Charles is six months old, and please don’t think for one second that my dishes are done and put away, my laundry is clean and folded, or that I’ve even been back to work. A very well written piece, dah-ling!
Cameron commented on Aug 19 11 at 11:35 pmHow do you schedule a session for within the first ten days when you don’t know when she’s going to be born???? Hrrrrm, guess I’d better find someone soon and figure that out!
Cameron commented on Aug 19 11 at 11:39 pmp.s. I’ve informed Jason that the ONLY things I plan to do for the first several months are to feed the baby and myself, try to keep both of us mostly clean, and try to have both of us sleep as much as possible. That’s it. We’ll see how that works out but it’s what I’m shooting for. :) And the “enjoying every second I can” part goes without saying, doesn’t it?
