My “Diaper Bag”
I’m not the biggest diaper bag fan, which is sort of funny because I’m quite the bag whore.
That’s right. You heard me.
A Bag Whore.
Honestly, I think I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect bag since High School.
I haven’t found her yet and believe me, I’ve tried. I have the closet of shame to show for it.
Big Bags. Little Bags. Carrier Bags. Back Packs. Clutches. Coach Bags.
Walmart Bags. Goodwill. Black Bags. Colorful Bags. Shiny Bags.
You name it, I’ve got it.
Right now I’m sporting a hippie, over the shoulder sack bag…
Hey, if it has a pocket and a strap I’m willing to try it.
EXCEPT if it’s a diaper bag.
I don’t know why I have such an aversion to them. Some look quite promising with all their pockets and fun patterns, but then I take a closer look.
Every one I find is made of the same nylon-ish material, and their straps are never long enough for this baby wearing momma.
Maybe I just haven’t found the right one yet?
Who knows, but instead of continuously searching for “that bag” I decided to turn all my bags into a “diaper bag.” At least the bigger ones, that is.
How? Through the use of this nifty invention.
The rubber band.
I simply wrap a bag of wipes, 2-3 diapers, and an extra onsie with the band, and voila!
Emergency baby kit that can get plopped into the bag of my choosing!
Of course it’s summer now so I don’t need too much. I also breastfeed, removing the need for bottles.
This trick may not be for everyone but it works for me. The only other things I make sure to bring is a burp blanket, which is normally draped over the carrier or folded in the corner, and depending on the weather, a pair of socks.
Are there any other purse-loving, diaper bag-hating moms out there? How do you do it?

If you’re still in the market for a bag, check out our new bag. So many of our customers are using it as a diaper bag. I linked to it in my signature above.
Robyn @ New Every Morning commented on Aug 18 11 at 9:18 pmI’m not a mom yet, but I truly love your low-maintenance mom-awesomeness. If you’re NOT low-maintenance, you’ve hidden it well! :)
sara commented on Aug 18 11 at 10:37 pmI do have a diaper bag, but I only use it for big trips. With a 2 year old and a 4 month old, you’ll catch me running out with nothing more than a burp cloth and a pack of wipes (usually). Babywearing and nursing are an advantage. I do both. I do throw my wallet in a tote with a few diapers and a change of clothes for each if we’ll be out more than an hour or two, taking the full diaper bag only if it’s an all day trip. I’m totally with you. The busier my life gets, the less I realize we need! And I’m not carrying any more than I need!
Jennifer commented on Aug 18 11 at 11:17 pmI don’t really get this post…Aren’t “diaper bags” just purses with diapers inside them? I don’t carry a nylon, short-strapped, ugly bag, but I do carry a larger purse that I happen to love and fill it with all of my baby goodies alongside my non-baby belongings. That little pile of stuff seems like it would work for a VERY specific situation (like you mentioned); one baby, summertime, short trip, and nursing. But when your kids are closely spaced, and you’re gone for more than 30 minutes-where would you strap in the snacks, water-cup for the older child, pacifier, emergency small toy/book, etc. Hating ugly bags is one thing, but a diaper bag serves a legitimate purpose. I’d love to run into you on the street and take a look inside your purse and see what you really carry when out running errands. Something tells me that the photo above is a bit of an exaggeration.
Also-it seems a bit contradictory when someone loves bags, but plays up a minimalist approach to things. If you’re out sans-baby what do you need beside your wallet and your keys? I don’t get the need for a giant over-the-shoulder bag if you don’t have diapers filling it (aka a diaper bag).
Brandy Jo commented on Aug 18 11 at 11:51 pmYou never cease to make me laugh!!! I love how blunt and diaper bag hating you are!!! LOL!!!
Jenna commented on Aug 19 11 at 1:46 amI could never find a diaper bag I didn’t hate either. I have a minimalist system similar to yours I can stuff in my regular bag (or sometimes just throw in the back of the car) for little events and a bookbag I can cram full for longer adventures. Glad I’m not the only one like this… I kinda felt like a mom fail.
Roni commented on Aug 19 11 at 2:02 am@Jennifer – How many moms do you know have both diaper bag and purse? Basically I use my purse, just like you. The post was just meant as a fun take on my dislike of traditional nylon diaper bags, which are marketed as a necessity. My friend saw my rubber band approach and thought it was cute which inspired the post.
Jessica commented on Aug 19 11 at 2:25 am@roni, this doesn’t have much to do with the post, but I just felt like I wanted to say good for you for actually reading the comments people leave you and responding to them. A lot of the other bloggers fail to do that and I appreciate that you do. I’ve also noticed that you read what the other bloggers are saying and chime in with comments there as well. I appreciate that. Makes this feel more like a community (which is how it is supposed to feel, after all) with a variety of mommas talking TO each other, rather than “the bloggers” talking at us and never really caring about what we have to say in return. Thanks.
Roni commented on Aug 19 11 at 2:32 am@Jessica – Thanks. :) I have a comment policy for myself. You can’t reply to them all but the ones that post a question or warrant a response, I do my best. As for the other bloggers I wish I could read them more! It’s so fun watching all their kids grow while sharing this experience with them.
Ali commented on Aug 19 11 at 4:25 amA ‘bag whore’ myself, I have spent 13 years avoiding the so-called diaper bags for the very same reasons you quote, preferring to use something more individual. Your elastic band idea is inspired! Finally, after all this time, I’m having a bag specifically designed for babywearing, and made out of woven wrap fabric – I’ll get to indulge in two ‘whore’ activities: bags and woven wraps :D
Robyn Quinn commented on Aug 19 11 at 8:48 amThis is such a funny post. I am bag obsessed. Cheap bags, expensive bags you name it. I also thought I was going to love diaper bags. I bought a Kate Spade diaper bag –returned it…I bought a Vera Bradley diaper bag—also hated. I am now using a LL Bean diaper bag which I actually like :)
Marie commented on Aug 19 11 at 9:25 amWe went with a diaper vest to enable easy baby wearing and to let my male spouse keep his “I’m too cool for a baby bag” attitude. It is polar fleece so it doesn’t go so well with hot summers, but even under/over a Minnesota-warm winter coat the diaper vest is great. I personally too seek the perfect bag, but I am rarely seen with one leaving the house because I prefer to have as little stuff to carry as possible, so this is turning into a hunt for the perfect thing to keep all the stuff that goes into a purse organized in my car… luckily the diaper vest has enough pockets for my wallet, phone, and some tissue.
Roni commented on Aug 19 11 at 9:35 am@Marie – I never heard of such a thing! ‘m off to check it out! Thanks!
Bailey commented on Aug 19 11 at 10:36 amI use different bags just like you do, none of which are diaper bags. My friend gave me one of her old “artist” bags, which looks a lot bigger than it is, but it helps me not drag so much crap around when we leave the house. I’m lucky that my kiddo is in the stage where I just need to pack a sippie cup, a snack, and a couple diapers and I’m good to go (at least for a day trip). The only thing of mine in the bag is my wallet! :)
1sttimemom commented on Aug 19 11 at 10:39 amI stuff my diaper bag too full bc of my “better safe than sorry” policy, so I don’t have room for my personal things… Therefore I carry a purse & a diaper bag. I don’t mind it at all. I’m sure as baby gets older I will be able to get a huge mommy purse & throw baby’s things in it. Cute post!
Sara commented on Aug 19 11 at 12:07 pmI use a H&M one, big enough for mommy stuff plus a few diapers, wipes, a onesie the nursin cover and the changing pad (it’s a thin one). I didn’t think of the rubber band before but I used a fabric thin bag to put all the baby stuff in it then in my purse so whenever I change my purse I just grab the little bag out of it and it works for me because I HATE diaper bags. For longer trips I carry extras in the trunk.
K commented on Aug 19 11 at 2:42 pmI have the same long strap hippie purse, though a different design! They’re the closest to the perfect bag that I’ve found. But after about four years, it’s on its death bed. I just got a canvas military style messenger bag to replace it. My diaper bag component is three diapers, travel wipes, and a mini bottle of hand sanitized in a Ziploc quart bag. I also have a couple of sandwich sized baggies in there in case there’s no diaper disposal option wherever I am and I have to carry the used one. Extra onesie, rubber banded, and a burp cloth which doubles as a changing pad and nursing cover, float around in the bag. I have a “real” diaper bag that I regret spending the money on. Anyone want to buy a Jujube bag? ;)
Sabrina commented on Aug 19 11 at 4:14 pmI always have my diaper bag. I have a 2 year old and a 9 month old. I never leave with out juice boxes, snacks, diapers, wipes, bibs, bottles you name it I have it in there. I have a Vera Bradley diaper bag and I love it. The big section holds everything I need for the kids and the front part holds my things so I don’t need to carry two bags. I think the straps are long but I’m a shorter person so I don’t know how well it work for a taller person.
Carol commented on Aug 19 11 at 5:37 pmI’m way past the diaper bag stage (my twins are 10), but when they were babies, I had a HUGE diaper bag. I didn’t necessarily love it, but when toting supplies for 2 infants, it came in handy. For a long time, I just threw my wallet in the diaper bag and didn’t carry a purse at all. Gotta say, it’s great being back to carrying around my stuff only. And I’m a bag whore too. My dh just doesn’t get it and hates that I always have a million bags filling up our hooks in the entryway.
Kristin commented on Aug 19 11 at 8:02 pmI have a little diaper pad/diaper/wipe holder I got at target that I love. It has a zipper to put my cards in and l can go anywhere. I never used a bag/purse till college and am hoping to get back there some day!
Jess commented on Aug 19 11 at 10:41 pmI have two kids and zero diaper bags. Why are they either extremely ugly or really expensive? For my first daughter I had a cute puma bag and now a leather shoulder bag for #2.
Kim commented on Aug 21 11 at 8:57 amMy first baby, I had this HUGE diaper bag. Full of stuff. Now that I’m expecting baby #3, I wouldn’t dream of pulling it back out. I have this little case that holds wipes, diapers and a changing mat. I throw that in a bag. Actually, I have this little back pack that someone made for my oldest. I essentially make them carry their own diaper bag. You just get to a point where you realize it’s not all that serious and don’t need all that stuff. Keep some of it in the trunk of your car.
