So You Took Your Baby to BlogHer? How’s that Working Out For You?

Preview 300x176 So You Took Your Baby to BlogHer? Hows that Working Out For You?Very well thank you. But a bit of a disclaimer. This is isn’t my first BlogHer rodeo. (For those of you unfamiliar, BlogHer is the largest annual conference for women who blog. Which is me, hi!) This is actually my fifth year attending BlogHer but my first one with a baby. And you know what? It’s not so bad. But if you’re considering it? Here’s some motherly/bloggery advice from me to you.

For me there is a magic “bring your baby to BlogHer age.” Before they’re crawling but after you have each other figured out (as in you’re the vision of breastfeeding perfection or bottle feeding perfection.) If the first eight weeks of figuring the whole feeding thing out is hard for you? Sit it out and wait until next year unless you enjoy stress. There is a very accommodating lactation lounge for pumping, nursing, rocking or feeding in general but there’s no way you could do an SNS or 3 part feedings (nurse, bottle, pump) here.

I have an amazing stroller (Peg Perego Skate) and an amazing sling. For the comfort of your baby a good stroller is a must, especially since you’ll be out and about walking a lot. It has to be easy for you to maneuver but sturdy enough to handle all your stuff and travels. Mine is a little large, but I’m willing to say the extra “excuse me’s” for the convenience. If there’s off site events you want to go to you’re either going to have to have a car seat for taxis or walk. I mean, you can carry your baby in a taxi but A) that’s illegal and B) well, just don’t tell me about it okay? It scares me. A sling of your choice (I brought a Babyhawk Mei Tai with me) to bring along as well helps when you need to park the stroller or a certain baby on EAST COAST TIME has a hard time adjusting to WEST COAST TIME and you don’t want to be stuck in the room or with a crying baby.

You’re not going to be able to do as much, some parties don’t allow babies (the private ones at least.) You won’t be able to run off at a moments notice to do the next hot thing and you’re going to be pretty tired. (So I’m not that tired, but I easily could be if I went overboard.) You may miss sessions because your baby decides it’s chow time/poop time/time to freak out time. Your baby will be your first priority, and some babies are divas.

The good news is there are three thousand women here. Two thousand nine hundred of them will volunteer (fight) over who gets to hold your baby. So you will have help if you’re the type that can accept it. Not to mention you have the best excuse ever to get out of boring conversations or work your way into really interesting ones with brands or people you really want to meet or work with.

Babies are natures greatest icebreakers.

Have you done a conference with a baby? What was your experience and what is your advice?

I loved getting to hang with you and your baby. Tell Vivi thanks for letting me give her that bottle and the snuggles and laughs.
