4585009947 0d8db2c05d 216x300 Songs that Get Us through Babyhood and Beyond.I spent 12 years as a trained dancer and while my middle has become a little softer, my extension a little less extended and my boobs way bigger (although my dance teacher would have never believed such thing was possible, snooty retired NYC principle dancers…) I still have rhythm. And today without realizing I danced with my baby strapped to me in my living room to Mumford and Sons and I started thinking about all the songs that have a deep connection to specific memories with each of my girls.

When I was pregnant with Vivi the song that stood out the most to me was “Human” by the Killers. And if you ever get the chance to see their concert performance from London? They open with that song and it will give you goosebumps so big they hurt. I always listened to it when I was alone in my car (mostly because the opinionated six year old I generally travel with wants nothing to do with me and my loud music.) The day after Vivi came home from the hospital Addie put in her Taylor Swift CD and started singing a song called “Never Grow Up” to her baby sister. I get misty just thinking about it.

The first song I remember really striking me with Addie was “In My Daughter’s Eyes.” I was coming out of a horrible PPD fog and it was a song that reminded me that even though Addie could take on some of my more difficult personality traits, she could and already is taking on some of my most admirable qualities (humility totally being one of them.) I still get weepy when I hear that song.

And every night during Addie’s babyhood I sang three songs to her, all from Disney movies. “Baby Mine” from Dumbo, “You’ll be in my Heart” from Tarzan and “Stay Awake” from Mary Poppins. Before Vivi I hadn’t rocked a tiny person to sleep in over four years. But as soon as Vivi was in my arms and we were together in the dark every word of every song came back to me as though no time had passed.

What are the songs that will always connect you with the early months of parenthood?

The ones my mother, who has passed, sang to me. It’s healing and comforting to me. Que sera sera, my marvelous little toy and raindrops, to name a few.

I hum to my daughter each night: Baby Mine (Dumbo) and a medley of All the Pretty Horses, Scarborough Faire and Greensleeves (all are in the same key). Also throw in You Are My Sunshine and All I Have to Do is Dream.

Oh, man, Taylor Swift’s “Never Grow Up” gets me BAWLING every time. I can’t get through a chorus to my baby girl without really, really losing it. I sing the beginning of the Beach Boys’ “Don’t Worry Baby”, and the chorus of Weezer’s “No Other One”.
