What Are Your Favorite Songs? [VIDEO]
A little over a month ago, I filmed Huck and myself singing some of our favorite little songs to send off to grandchild-starved grandparents. And then, in a classic Natalie move, I never actually sent the video. (Hi mom! Sorry!)
Songs are funny things. Somehow, quite accidentally, songs can become bigger than themselves. Like how we sing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” before every nap, “Moon River” every night before bed, and how whenever I sing the songs I used to sing as a kid it always feels especially weird in the most delightful kind of way.
After the jump, a quick video of some of our favorite songs. (And you’re in luck, grandparents! Huck finally says hello!) (And can you believe how much smaller he was then?!)
Now you tell me–what are your favorite songs to sing with your babies?

Lori Weaver commented on Jul 15 11 at 12:15 amMy friend just had a baby and I made some videos of the baby for them and Baby Mine popped into my head. You know the song from Dumbo. Ugh, just thinking of the song makes me cry. Then another tear jerker, Somewhere out there from An American Tale. Lol! Now everyone is crying, right?
Jessica commented on Jul 15 11 at 1:06 amChild of Mine. Can’t think of who sings it. Gets me everytime! For fun, we sing You are My Sunshine and Itsy Bitsy Spider.
Mary commented on Jul 15 11 at 10:31 amI love your videos! The part at the end had me laughing out loud {at least until your video ended and the “related videos” came up — those looked creepy}. I like to sing Primary songs, and songs that my mother made up when we were babies. I also like to make up little songs of my own, but they’re nothing fancy; one is just a simple formula that goes like this: “{name, two syllables} is my {two syllable adjective} {boy or girl — I have twins}, and I love {him/her} so mu-uch!” The most common rendition of this song is “Maxwell is my hungry boy, and I love him so mu-uch!”

as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be.
I’ll like you forever, I’ll love you for always
for all of eternity, my baby you’ll be.it’s from a book, but my mom made it into a song and sang it every night. i can’t wait till my she-tus is here and I can sing it to her, too. (10 more weeks!!!) you’re musical- I’m sure you could make up your own tune!
JoAnna commented on Jul 16 11 at 1:20 pmI sang this one to all eight of our babies and now I sing it to the grandbabies:
“Here’s a ball for baby, big and soft and round
Here’s the baby’s hammer, see how he (or she) can pound.
Here’s the baby’s trumpet, doo, da, doo, doo, doo.
Here’s the way the baby plays a peek-a-boo!
Here’s the baby’s music clapping, clapping so
Here’s the baby’s soldiers, standing in a row.
Here’s the big umbrella, keep the baby dry
Here’s the baby’s cradle, rock the baby bye.”You can guess the actions by the words of the song and babies LOVE it as do their toddler siblings. At the end we say “Shhh, baby’s sleeping and pretend to be asleep. Awww good times.
PS We love the Primary songs too–”I am a Child of God” was the standard lullaby for bedtime.

Amber G commented on Jul 18 11 at 5:17 pmI hope you got that song off the movie South Pacific!! When that islander lady sings it (although its extremely cheesy) it just makes you smile! haha
love your blog and your writing by the way. I’ve never commented before, sorry!
Megan commented on Jul 18 11 at 8:16 pmMy dad and his hippie friends would go camping every year, and at the end of every campfire songfest, we’d sing the song below (with the second verse repeated over and over again, naming everyone in the circle ). I sing it to Camryn and Tamsin every night (only much more coolly, of course). Does it not totally remind you of “A Mighty Wind”?! The guy on the right even looks exactly like Eugene Levy. I swear this is what he and Catherine O’Hara were going for. :)
