100 1095.JPG 250x300 Babywearing Badassery.I feel totally badass when I’m babywearing.

There’s really no other way to put it.

There’s something so natural, wonderful and empowering about holding your baby close to you without using your hands at all. (But let’s be honest, no one wearing a baby can resist patting the little baby bum lump. NO ONE. In fact Addie has a ring sling for her dolls and even she pats their bum.) I think part of the reason I love it so much is because the breastfeeding. It isn’t so easy for me, but the babywearing? Super easy and it allows for so much of that wonderful bonding while still being able to eat a sandwich.

With Addie (2004) I had a Snugli. A ridiculous impractical and uncomfortable Snugli, but it seemed SO practical at the time! Then one Saturday while walking through the Salt Lake Farmer’s Market there was a woman selling pouch slings that she made herself. She let me try one (Addie was probably about 9 months at the time) and as soon as she slid into the sling onto my hip we were both sold. She snuggled into me and I was able to enjoy carrying her around on my body for the first time since she had been in my body. I wore her in that trusty pouch sling until she outgrew it (well, okay, my back outgrew it) at 35 pounds.

Two years later when I took the Internet’s hand and we began our trusty relationship I realized there are at least a hundred different ways to wear a baby and I was enchanted. I looked forward to the day I would get to wear a baby again, this time from the very beginning. And sure enough on Vivi’s first day home I snuggled her down into my new Sleepy Wrap and there she has happily spent at least a portion of her day almost every day.

My front room may look like the display floor of Buy Buy Baby but nothing calms Vivi down as much as wearing her does. Over the next year I’m planning on giving you the full scoop on all the different carriers I have (which is kind of an embarrassing amount, but I promise they all serve their purpose!) during all of Vivi’s different life stages and the various and assorted things we do in life. And I’m not just talking Baby Bjorns here. I’m talking wraps that involve origami type folding that in theory seems difficult but in reality are some of the most comfortable things you’ll ever wear.

My hope is that if you’re not already a babywearer I will make you one. (There was a time I believed that the only people who wore their babies were those who had questionable personal hygiene and smelled of patchouli, ah…stereotypes.) I meet far too many women with grown children while I’m wearing Vivi who say “OH! I wish they would have had those when I had babies!” and I can’t bring myself to say “They did! You just didn’t hang with the right crowd!

Guess what? Natalie is giving away a Baby Bjorn Original Carrier! You have until Friday night to enter.

If the sling fits… then you can find  it at Babble’s Best Baby Carriers!

I had the backpack style carrier and a moby with my first, and he hated both. He did not want to be held close… Ever. He wanted freedom lol. I am so hoping baby #2 likes to be worn in a sling because I feel it will make my life as the other of 2 much easier…. Will be able to hold baby and still hold big brother’s hand, still make pb&j, and still hold books and turn the pages haha

I have the Infantino Wrap and Tie carrier and I love it. It was only $30 dollars and it can be worn on the front facing in, facing ouyt or on the back. The directions are sewn onto the carrier in the right places like it says somthing along the lines of “this side towards you at waist and tie in the back” at the waist tie. No losing instructions or forgetting when it gets packed away for a later baby. I don’t use it a ton, because we like having the storage space of a stroller, but I’ve used it to take the baby and my 8 year old hiking, and I wear her on my walks with friends because it’s just a better workout. The best part is that it’s easily adjustable for any size. I’m a plus-size momma with a 42 DD chest and I can make it fit me comfortbly with room to spare. I can’t get any of the expensive ones with buckles and such to fit me at all. It’s super easy to get on and off. Tie 2 knots and you’re done.

I have a moby wrap. Lilly and I loved it. It made things sooo much easier when you have a colicky/refluxy baby. Sje was always happiest when I wore her around the house. I even now use it out and about

I understand totally the different wraps/carriers for different reasons! I am accumulating quite a stash myself. And I’ve had other people ask to pat my babies bum while he was in the wrap.

I can’t believe you carried her till 35 lbs! I think my back would have gave out long before then. We have a bjorn that I only used when walking the dog with my first and have never used with my second. You’ve made me feel like I’m missing out.. perhaps I should look into this baby wearing, Bella’s only 9 months old and I do have questionable hygiene =)

I love, love, love babywearing! In the early days my husband would use the ergo with insert but, for me, there’s nothing like feeling your baby wrapped around you in soft fabric. I was using a Close, but I have loaned it out and am investigating wrap carriers at the mo. My boy just doesn’t seem as happy in the ergo on my back and, to be honest, I haven’t found it the best for for my narrow shoulders. Apparently the Boba solves this problem, but I still love the feel of a sling or wrap.

I, too, had a Snugli with my first baby (1995) and wore her constantly – she was an early baby and babywearing helped her with the temp regulating, breathing, etc. and just made her calm like nothing else (well, except washing her hair, but that is tough to do when you are on the go.). After that experience, I was determined to be prepared with the “right” babywearing equipment for my second baby, born 8 months ago. I figured that there would be a few more options available, what with 15 years worth of technological advances and all, but I was stunned with the wide array. I ended up with a new “modern” Snugli and two slings before E was born. After spending the first couple weeks in the NICU (and being more than 50 miles apart for the first few days) babywearing with my little pumpkin was even more important to me. I tried the three things I had on deck, but none of them worked ideally – she was just too little. Especially the sling. It is one non-adjustable piece, and I was so afraid she’d suffocate or fall out that I had to hold her with both hands anyway and was still a nervous wreck! A friend recommended the Sleepy Wrap, and my hubby got me one. I. Love. It. A LOT. And E loves it, too. She prefers facing out most of the time now, unless she is really tired, but she loves it. It is so comfy and secure feeling at the same time. And it fits me (I am 5’2″) my older daughter (5’6″) and my husband (5’10″). I can even nurse her in it discreetly. Now that E is bigger, we do use the Snugli and the sling for certain activities, but the Sleepy Wrap is still my hands down favorite. It has become my number one recommendation for the piece of baby equipment you must have with a new baby. I wholeheartedly believe that babywearing makes for happier, healthier babies and happier mommies!

I had a Snugli with my first and he HATED it. So I didn’t even try babywearing with my 2nd. I WISH I had known about babywraps with my boys because we all missed out on so much. When I was pregnant with my daughter I decided to research and decided on a Sleepy Wrap. We both loved it! She’s 10 months old now and I miss the days when she would sleep in it. Now I can only wear her for short periods of time before she wriggles like crazy to get out and play.
