Spit That Out! A Book For Eco-Concerned Parents.
I’ve probably said this exclamation to Fuzz at least twelve times…in the last six hours. Fuzz puts pretty much EVERYTHING in his mouth these days. Yesterday, I fished out a sticker from Trader Joe’s, and today, a mouthful of grass. But this is not why I bring up this phrase, on this particular occasion.
If you recall over the last several months, I’ve made my concerns for environmental maladies known. I’ve raised my thoughts on the safety of plastics, and the fear of the super-germ. As it turns out, I have a friend in fear, an anxiety partner, so to speak. Her name is Paige Wolf and she wrote a book which addresses every concern that I’ve ever had regarding the environmentally unfriendly ‘environment’ in which we are forced (blessed?) to raise our babies.
Wolf’s Book: Spit That Out! The Overly Informed Parent’s Guide to Raising Children in the Age of Environmental Guilt not only touches on the fears I (and so many other moms) have, but she also confesses how much or how little she does about each one of these issues in her own day-to-day struggles with parenting.
Spit That Out! is divided into humorously titled chapters such as: Maybe It’s Safer to Just Go Play In Traffic; When Real Knives Seem Safer Than Toy Trucks. Wolf includes personal anecdotes as well as those from other moms from all ends of the spectrum: Moms that shop at Walmart to moms who wouldn’t let a non-organic piece of cotton grace their baby’s buttocks. In addition, Wolf has quotes from experts regarding such issues as labor standards in various countries, or how to watch television with your children.
Also, there are helpful sidebars with ‘Green Mom Sanity Tips’ and ‘Dollar Savvy Sustainability’ the latter of which includes websites to buy ecologically sound toys and products for your baby.
