Amazing Prenatal Yoga Slideshow! Don’t Try This at Home!
My friend Brookes gave birth to a beautiful baby girl yesterday and is resting in the hospital with her bundle of sweetness. But just a few weeks ago she was defying gravity for this glorious prenatal photoshoot by Sandy Foster of Photoesque and Yoga Bliss Photo. Now before you go trying this at home, Brookes is a professional and did yoga throughout her pregnancy. What do you think? Are you inspired to go back in time and stay in great shape while you were pregnant? Maybe next time? I am. Aren’t they beautiful? Aren’t you a little annoyed with how awesome she is?
Brookes is an instructor at Sunstone Yoga in Dallas
Sandy Foster is available for portrait photography and photography lessons in the Dallas Area. And also at Yoga Bliss Photo

Vicki commented on Jun 18 11 at 7:20 pmNo offense to your friend but several if these poses, the backbends and arm balance, can be very dangerous to do unsupported while pregnant. They may look beautiful (and they do) but the can overstretch the already stretched abdominal muscles and uterus. Seriously, your readers should not try this at home!!
There is a lot of yoga that you can do while pregnant that is good for mama and baby. I can’t imagine having been pregnant without it!

Deena Blumenfeld RYT, RPYT, LCCE commented on Jun 20 11 at 11:20 amThe photos are beautiful. However, we need to keep in mind, that this lovely yogi is a long-time practitioner and teacher. When a woman has been doing yoga, at this physical level, for an extended period of time, barring complications with her pregnancy, she can keep at this level as long as it feels good to her.
My concern is that even with the “don’t try this at home”, women assume either that they can or that they *should* be doing this. Many women come to yoga for the 1st time during pregnancy. Images like this, although stunning, give a false ideal. They set an unreasonable expectation, and can actually cause feelings of inadequacy.
I see this in my own prenatal yoga classes. Moms who are embarrassed that they “aren’t flexible”, moms who push themselves harder than they should because the mom next to them is “that flexible”, etc. As a prenatal yoga teacher, it is my job not only to help women gain physical strength and flexibility, but to increase their confidence and enliven their spirit.
“Inner Beauty, Inner Light” by Leboyer http://www.amazon.com/Inner-Beauty-Light-Pregnant-Women/dp/1557043159 shows Iyengar’s daughter in headstand and other advanced poses at 38 weeks. However, Leboyer has a strong focus on the spiritual and emotional aspects of practice and pregnancy.
A bit about me – I’m a mom of 2 (ages 6 & 2), a long time yogi, Prenatal Yoga instructor and Lamaze Childbirth Educator http://www.shininglightprenatal.com
Vicki commented on Jun 20 11 at 5:38 pm@deena – there is a great book that I used during and after my pregnancy called Iyengar Yoga for Motherhood. It is a fantastic resource that my teacher and I used weekly (I continued in my regular class with modifications during pregnancy) and still refer to it if I have a pregnant student in my class.
