Our cat Chuck is investigating the baby situation!

On Babble’s Being Pregnant blog, I voiced my concerns about how our cats would react to the introduction of our new bundle of joy.  We have two cats, Chuck and Moose.  Chuck, is a lover.  He loves laying on his back while being scratched on his belly, snuggling in our big warm bed and purrs constantly.  Loud noises and new things tend to frighten him a little so I imagined a new baby would take some getting used to.  Moose is our nosy, naughty black cat and I was particularly worried about him.

When we first brought Wolf home, my husband leaned down to let Moose smell him.  Moose nudged him with his nose and rubbed against him.  We were shocked and thought, hey that was easy!  Then we quickly understood that Moose didn’t know what he was rubbing against.  Soon he was puffed up and cowering backward because he was afraid of Wolf, or that crazy little moving thing in my husband’s arms! But so far Moose has been ok with Wolf’s arrival, aside from his increased meowing at our door at night or his constant desire to be in someone’s lap.

Chuck slowly peeks into Wolf’s bassinet or cautiously puts one paw on the Boppy while I’m feeding him, just to make sure he’s not causing any trouble.  But for the most part, Chuck doesn’t seem too phased by Wolf’s presence.  Except when he’s crying.  Both cats are really concerned when Wolf is making sounds at very high decibels, but Chuck quickly exits the scene.  However, during 4am feedings Chuck is always the one hanging out in Wolf’s room with me.

Both Moose and Chuck have warmed up a little to the idea of a baby in the house.  I’m still not sure that they know who or what he is just yet.  Now I’m just waiting for all three of them to become snuggle buddies.  Stay tuned for part two!

It’s so good to read about cats adapting well to a baby! So far, I haven’t heard any bad stories, actually, but I’m still a bit nervous about introducing our cat to the new arrival in a few months’ time.
