Baby G can suddenly crawl, but she still can't sit herself up!

At 9 months old, Baby G continues to surprise us. Of course, the biggest surprise was the first one, when she decided to make her arrival right at six weeks early.  And since then, her physical development has been kind of out of order and hard to predict. Her newest accomplishment fits right in with this trend.

As I’ve blogged about in the past month or two, she’s been pretty late with the whole sitting up thing, and in fact, she still can’t get into a sitting position on her own. If we plop her down on her bum in a sitting position, she can now maintain her balance (finally – even that took quite a while). But now, SURPRISE!  All of a sudden – and I mean totally all of a sudden – she is crawling! For realz!

As you can see from the video below, it’s still sort of a “commando crawl” (or as my father used to call this kind of baby-locomotion, “the Audie Murphy crawl”), but she is definitely capable of getting where she wants to go. It’s so adorable to watch her scooting around with a determined look in her eye that tonight, I kept putting her down a few feet away from some toy I knew she’d go for, and then watching her drag herself over to the bright, shiny object of desire. Maybe this was wrong of me – treating my baby like I would a puppy playing fetch – but she didn’t seem to mind.

Baby G Commando Crawls at 9 Months, 1 Week

For purposes of comparison, check out this much different crawling style adopted by G’s next-oldest sibling, her now-3 year old sister, C. This video was taken of C doing her wacky crawl when she was 11 months old, about one month before she started actually walking. (and yes, yes indeed, my two youngest girls do look pretty much EXACTLY alike. In fact, even I have trouble telling them apart in photos.)

Big Sister C’s Wacky Crawling Style, 11 Months Old

It’s really interesting to me that Baby G is starting to crawl before she is able to get into a sitting position on her own. Developmentally, this seems completely out of order. Have any of your babies done it this way? How long after crawling were they able to sit themselves up? And how about the “Audie Murphy crawl?” Did your baby start this way and then go to a more traditional crawl, or did he/she go straight from commando-crawl to pulling up and walking? Tell me in the comments below.

My Baby Is In the 100th Percentile For Cute | Babys First Year Blog commented on Apr 29 11 at 12:29 am

My boyfriend’s nephew (one of twins) crawled like Charlotte. The other one didn’t crawl like that. So weird, these baby creatures.

Alison Cosker commented on Apr 06 11 at 10:42 am

My son didn’t ever crawl normal either. He went from rolling everywhere to a commando crawl for about a week and then started pulling up and doing what we called a bear crawl. He was on his hands and feet, never his knees. He was walking by about 10 months or so.

My son Trenton crawled at 9 months before he could sit up. :)

My eldest daughter crawled commando style at 9 months and then she crawled on her hands and knees a couple of months later. But she would do this very weird belly-to-bum movement where she would stick her legs straight out behind her and swing them around until she was siting up. It is so hard to describe. I wish we had caught it on film. It was like some kind of super flexible yoga move. My son pulled up before he could crawl. He never did the Audie Murphy crawl but when he did start crawling, he would crawl forward just a little, grab what he wanted, and crawl back to his original spot. It took him forever to figure out that crawling would actually take him places. My nearly 7 month old baby has only just figured out how to sit up unassisted and that only lasts for a minute or two, but she has only rolled from tummy to back. She is so close to going from back to tummy but hasn’t figured it out just yet. I can’t wait to see her rolling around the floor (she kind of pivots on her back though).

My baby brother (12 years younger) never sat up; he went straight to crawling, pulling up, then walking. And as I recall he walked right around a year or so.

Nelson's Mama commented on Apr 06 11 at 11:13 am

It’s not all that out of order. Most babies wind up getting into the sitting position by sort of sitting back and to the side —- from all fours. Once she’s up on all fours more often she’ll probably figure out she can twist, go back, and – boom, SIT. :)

Kim commented on Apr 06 11 at 11:22 am

My son crawled at 7 months and couldn’t sit up till 10 months. He was funny in that he always wanted tummy time, from birth. As soon as he could roll he would roll to make sure he was on his tummy. He had a milk allergy and other tummy issues, and the doctor figured that being on his tummy helped him with the gas and reflux somehow. All that tummy time built up those muscles, and his core (key for sitting) was a bit weak. He didn’t walk till 14 months, and hasn’t stopped running since.

First off, did you make her shirt out of the same material as the rug? If you sit her on the rug sne would be hard to see :)

Second, That crawl is SWEET!

My older daughter crawled just like C. I called it the crab crawl.

Claire R commented on Apr 06 11 at 12:19 pm

I guess she didn’t read the manual. ;-)

jonah commented on Apr 06 11 at 1:03 pm

I never crawled, apparently, but walked at 10-11 months. I’d say the normal range of variation is pretty wide on this.

QoB commented on Apr 06 11 at 1:28 pm

My son did what my friends affectionately called an alien crawl. One knee never touched the ground, instead he propelled himself (at first on all fours and then up on one knee) with one foot starting under his chest and pushing out behind him. Every pair of pants was worn out on one knee because it dragged and never left the floor. He also enjoyed doing downward dog for no particular reason other than to drive his head into the bed. Babies are, indeed, strange little creatures.

Lee commented on Apr 06 11 at 2:32 pm

My oldest did a sort-of-backwards crawl for about a week or two before she started to walk. She was never really interested in crawling.

Sajmom commented on Apr 06 11 at 2:43 pm

I’ve learned from my baby – that every baby is so different in the way they reach their milestones. She COULD walk at 16 months – but CHOSE not to until 19 months. She is the most cautious child I have ever seen in my life. I wonder if baby G is cautious too and doesn’t want to fall over?

laura commented on Apr 06 11 at 2:50 pm

My six month old just started crawling this week too, and bypassed the sitting up thing as well. That said we call her crawling method “the seal crawl” – she reaches forward with both hands then drags the rest of her body along. Not very elegant, but fairly efficient at getting across the room.

Sarah commented on Apr 06 11 at 4:15 pm

It’s easy to get caught up in the milestones but they can become stifling. My middle child never crawled, just rolled. She did sit up at about 6 months and walked at ninemonths. My youngest never sat and hardly crawled, he walked at 11 months. He had heart surgery at 9 weeks and spent so much time flat on his back. Once they became upright they never looked back.

HeatherC. commented on Apr 06 11 at 5:34 pm

AWESOME! I think Charlotte’s crawl was pretty efficient when you think about it. It allowed for a quick sit to scan surroundings. You sure do make beautiful babies.

Katy E commented on Apr 06 11 at 5:44 pm

My little guy crawled and pulled to a stand before he started sitting. Essentially, I think he chose not to sit until he could see a reason for it–it hurts a lot less to fall to a sit from standing then to do a full on timber. Until then, he was happily content to investigate the world from his tummy.

Katie commented on Apr 06 11 at 5:55 pm

I had a crazy physically-advanced boy–he was crawling by 4 months, but not getting into a sitting up position into 4+1/2 months. Then he was completely walking the day he turned 8 months, but couldn’t get into a standing position without holding onto something. They were wild times because his body was way ahead of his mind!

Jenn @ Juggling Life commented on Apr 06 11 at 7:50 pm

Makes sense–as you’re doing–to keep an eye on her. She’s still got a lag in terms of her early arrival. There’s important material for her in getting from tummy to sitting (& back) so it’s helpful for what follows in life to do all the level-changing motions. That she reach with both arms & use both legs & once she’s gotten the tummy crawl get to all fours is really what you’re looking for. Kind of lagging/not-in-use arm or leg is worth asking about.

She’s so cute!

Sarah Buttenwieser commented on Apr 06 11 at 9:55 pm

Again: if you are concerned, take her for an early intervention assessment. You have nothing to lose by doing so and a lot to lose by not doing so. Time is muscle.

My daughter was born 4 weeks early, and she had some motor delays which sound similar to Georgia’s. She crawled at about 9 months, but she could not get herself into a sitting position on her own until she was about 11 months. Her issue was lack of core strength and a lack of understanding/ability to roll over. We had her evaluated for early intervention, and she ended up getting physical therapy for a little over a month between months 10-11. Once the PTs helped her learn to roll over it was like something clicked in her brain, and she took off and became much more agile than I was ready for. It’s funny-my daughter’s delays were so subtle yet I knew there was something different. I’m glad I pushed on the early intervention because even though I know she would have caught up eventually, I knew that with a little extra help she could get right on schedule. She’s 21 months now, and you’d never know that there was anything different about her in the beginning. Good luck with G!

The sibling resemblance is uncanny! They are both so beautiful, as are the rest of your children.

G looks like one happy, healthy baby to me!

Tara commented on Apr 07 11 at 2:06 pm

thats weird. the second video is kinda how my son crawls. but my son was sitting up at 4 months and crawling at 5 and pulling up and walking at 6. i dunno. just be glad she can crawl, why worry about it?

liz commented on Apr 09 11 at 9:52 pm

My boy scooted before he sat up, and didn’t really crawl officially before he was trying to walk. The crawling only came as an after effect of him not being able to walk fully. I think your baby is fine. Movement timelines are guidelines, not rules.

Over here, in Germany, we are told, that this is the best sign, that everything goes right…!
It is said, that actually your baby should crawl first, and will sit down itself next. (By the way: We believe that you should never sit down your child, and “train it to learn sitting”. It has to learn it all by itself. Because everything else is unhealthy…….)
I really think it’s interesting, how different parents are teached, here and there…!

(please forgive me my awful English….!)

Dorothee-Maria Lotufo commented on Apr 10 11 at 3:11 am

Yes, my son crawled G-style at 5 months, (never did lie C), proper racing on all fours like a dog at 6.5 months, stood up at 7.5 months, started to walk very carefully along furniture almost immediately after, but sat up on his own only at 8.5 months. He could sit kind of leaning forward and resting on one arm a month before that, but fully unaided straight back – only 8 months, and shortly after that he managed to get himself into sitting position on his own too.
