Is the Dukan Diet the answer to losing the baby weight?

Some call it the French version of the Adkins weight loss method and it’s shaping up to be the big diet fad of 2011.

So is the Dukan Diet the answer for women hoping to shed the baby weight quickly?  American mamas will find out soon enough.

The Dukan Diet has sold 3.5 million copies in 14 different languages and now the diet books are headed to America.  According to the New York Times. Dr. Pierre Dukan, the diet’s creator, sold the North American Rights for $1.3 million up front.

So how does it work?  The New York Times summed it up in a paragraph:

His own diet’s high-protein, low-fat approach is organized into four phases:  attack, cruise, consolidation and stabilization.  The first encourages dieters to eat as much as they want of nonfatty, protein rich foods, including oat bran (a key component) washed down with oceans of water.  The second stage introduces vegetables, but no fruit.  The third brings with it two slices of bread, a serving of cheese and fruit an two servings of carbohydrates a day, with two weekly “celebration” meals with wine and dessert (the diet is French, after all).  The final stage includes six days a week of “anything goes” and one day of reversion to strict protein -only stage one – for the rest of your life.

Critics call the Dukan Diet just another fad and say it’s really similar to the Adkins diet that took the world by storm several years ago.  I agree, especially since the always obnoxious Gisele Bundchen is following it, as Famecrawler reports.  My personal belief: the less the world hears from Gisele the better off we’ll all be.

I’m trying to lose the baby weight the good old-fashioned way. Exercising, eating lots of low fat proteins like tuna fish and chicken and cottage cheese, drinking lots of water and breastfeeding. I delivered my son three weeks ago weighing somewhere around 190 pounds. Yes, I gained something like sixty pounds. I weighed myself today and I’m at 158. So I’ll give this latest diet fat a big thumbs down and keep doing what I’m doing.

I lost 40lbs in the first week after my son’s birth, and 45 lbs total since he was born on January 20th, so just shy of two months ago. I think eating right and breastfeeding are the easiest way to go (although I realize it doesn’t work that way for everyone).

I think that if you’re breastfeeding it’s always best to focus just on eating healthy, LOTS of water, and exercising. When I quiet breastfeeding I’ll consider more dieting, but I’m too nervous about milk supply right now.
