I Sound Like My Mother And Other Horrors
I recently discovered I sound just like my mom. No, I don’t mean the things I say, although recently uttering the sentence “You better stop crying or I’ll give you something to cry about”, was a fairly traumatic turning point for me. But apparently I’m not alone there
What I mean is the tone of my voice is very similar to my mom’s.
We have these old cassette tapes my mom made when my brother was five and I was around two or three. We’re singing and playing and my mom can be heard urging me to talk.
The other day I was consoling Violet about something or other and there was that voice! My mom’s voice. Only it was my voice.
Whoaa. Duuude.
I don’t have to tell you what a cringe-worthy moment that was for me. We go through life trying to get our damn mom’s voice OUT of our heads, right? You’re dating him? Is a B really your best work? That’s what you’re going to wear?
Now here I am at the ripe old age of 33, channeling my mom’s voice and her tired cliches. I don’t know if the voice thing is genetics or – like the cliches – it’s just years and years and years and years of listening to her talk but either way it’s an unsettling turn of events here in Motherhood Land.

´You want to play even stevens? OH we´ll play even stevens!´
or this gem..
´I wasn´t yelling… THIS IS YELLING!´
haha can´t wait!
Julie commented on Mar 17 11 at 11:44 pmOMG I know exactly what you mean. With my first kids, I knew I’d been using a lot of her phrases and whatnot, and that was just funny to me. Now, with my last kid, at 31, I SOUND EXACTLY LIKE HER. Tone, pitch, everything. It’s freaking unnerving as all get out.
Ruth commented on Oct 23 11 at 9:17 amUgh. I have the horror of turning into my dad: stumbling over my words, taking too long to explain something, awkward rude comments that came out wrong, smart a** comments that only we think are funny…..oi vey.
