Baby G sez FEED MEEEEE!

Baby G is 8 months old now, and as those of you who have been reading along our first year journey know, she showed absolutely NO interest in solids until a week or two ago when she suddenly decided that real food RAWKS.  (See video evidence).

But even though G told us she now likes actual human food, after 8 months of bottle feeding with NO solids, I just sort of forgot that once she started enjoying solids, I was supposed to start feeding them to her…like, on a regular basis.

So over the past few days, our little sunshiney fairy princess was waaaay fussier than usual. Jon and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Teething? Nope, no teeth poking through yet. Fever? Nope. Upset tummy? No evidence of that. What could be wrong?

Suddenly Jon realized that G isn’t sick, she’s just really hungry! The occasional and random novelty solid feeding sessions were only wetting her appetite. She was fussing and refusing her bottle because she wanted us to fix her a ham sandwich, dammit.

Duh. Sometimes I can’t believe that she is my fifth child. I still make a lot of rookie mistakes. (Oh, you mean like FORGETTING TO FEED YOUR BABY???!!!)

So now I am offering her banana and oatmeal and pureed carrots and yes, even little nibbles of my ham sandwich. I am trying to offer three times a day at least so she never gets frantic like she was before we figured this out.  She is much happier again.

Oh! And in other news, G can suddenly remain in a sitting position! She is ahead on so many other developmental milestones, but sitting up really has eluded her. At 8 months, she’s still not great at it, but she’s getting there. I think I may get her doing some baby pilates so she can improve her core strength. (I think that would help with the whole sitting up thing. )

Here’s a video I shot today of Baby G playing with toys while actually remaining in an upright sitting position all by herself. So cute!

She is precious. When you were recently worrying out loud about why she was not sitting up on her own yet, I could not help going right back to my training at American Ballet Theatre. When my colleagues and I were learning the Primary Level of ABT’s National Training Curriculum, our mentor–and co-author of the curriculum–Raymond Lukens, explained that there is no barre work given AT ALL in the Primaries (A,B, and C–that’s three years of study, ages 5,6, and 7). The reason for this is to develop (you guessed it) core strength. Young children’s heads are HUGE in relation to the rest of them. I mean, srsly, imagine how odd adults would look if our heads were the same size as infants, toddlers, and young children, relative to the rest of our bodies. We would all look like aliens. So during those three years we focus literally on learning how to stand on two legs, and how to transfer weight from one leg to the other, without using the barre as a prop–so that the tummy and back musculature have a chance to develop and grow strong. Honestly, I wish this kind of training had been around when I was that age–I still “cheat” like crazy, with a white knuckles kind of grip on the barre when I am in class. G looks like she is coming along very nicely indeed–and she does not even look like an alien. Adorable (melt)! I think a pink tutu would suit her just fine, don’t you?

Love the furrowed brow at the raspberry about 20 seconds in. She looks a lot like C. They are both ridiculously cute.

Crazy cute!!!! Sheesh, how do you get anything done? I would spend all of my time trying to get that beautiful smile to reappear.

She does look so much like C, but with a HUGE splash of “there’s nobody like me in the world.”

Oh, Katie, She must bring you so much joy while you slog through the pain. All five of your children are stunningly beautiful.

Katie – do you have a balance ball? One of the therapists at my daughter’s school suggested sitting them on the ball and holding their hips, NOT their waist, so that they have to do the strengthening themselves. Great for core strength!

She is so dang cute. Love those cheeks.

Also, if she is going from laying down to sitting up, hold her hands for balance but let her work those abs….

She’s such a dolly. My baby daughter, Georgia, is wearing those exact pj’s right now, so funny.
