I Have A Diaper Question.

Posted by naomi on March 3rd, 2011 at 12:42 am

IMAG0399 200x300 I Have A Diaper Question.I use disposable diapers. There I said it. I do feel guilty about it, but clearly not enough to actually start using cloth diapers, especially since my baby has just started eating solid food and his poops are about to get really stanky.

I have a question about his diaper size? He’s about 19lbs, maybe a little less. He’s much more evenly proportioned, unlike the Shnook who just had the biggest thighs and belly you have ever seen on a baby.  Shnook was nearly 21lbs at the same age as Fuzz and I could not get a pair of pants to fit him. He was wearing 12-18 month clothing at 6 months but the legs of the pants were so long I had to roll them up. He was in size 4 diapers because those seemed to be the only ones that got around his waist. Then, he stayed in that size until he was almost two years old.

Fuzz is currently in a size 3 and they fit him really well. He’s had a growth spurt and he’s a lot longer. Plus he’s moving around a lot more lately, so I think his chunk rate is slowing down. However…lately he’s been blowing out his diaper a bunch. He definitely did this in other smaller diapers as well, but it seems like if it’s not up the back, it’s out the legs. I’m not sure if it has to do with how he’s sitting when he actually has his explosion but it’s really rare that I change a poop diaper these days without changing a whole outfit. Could this mean that he needs a bigger size? I’d be sad to move on to size 4′s already because:

1) I just got a case of the 3′s and

2) There are 20 more diapers in a case of 3′s than a case of 4′s–that’s like four extra days of diapers for the same price!

3) Technically, the weight limit for size 3 is 16-28lbs, and size 4 is 22-37lbs so a 4 seems WAY too big, right?

I’ve heard through the momosphere that blow-outs mean it’s time to go up a size. But is this really true? Or are blow-outs just a fact, no matter what size the baby wears?

 I Have A Diaper Question.

I know this is not what you want to hear, but blow outs are not an issue with a fitted and covers cloths system. I’ve been using these: http://www.babybeehinds.com.au/store/pc/BBH-Bamboo-Fitted-13p6.htm
since birth and have never had a single leak.

Get a little pack of the fours and give them a shot. If he still blows them out you can go back to the threes. Starting solids may help too, it won’t be as runny. Does he do it the same time every day? I usually use up the last of the smaller diapers at times when I know they won’t fill em up.

For my daughter it really had to do with the thickness of her thighs and diaper sizes. I noticed that “organic” diapers tended to be larger than their counterparts in name branded ones. With that said, I went through the organic diapers much faster than the name branded ones.

Believe it or not, the stanky poops are one of the most compelling reasons to switch to cloth! That way you dump the smelly poop in the toilet — where, arguably, it belongs. Just my two cents!

Either way, as Lucky mentioned, blowouts should be less of an issue with solids. My little guy’s poops pretty much peel off his dipes in little cakes. (Gross, but true!)

Again for the cloth. I do cloth, but I will be the first to admit it is not for everyone. However, my little one is on solids and it really isn’t that bad. I do keep her pail in her room upstairs and that seems to help. There are things you can do to keep the pail stink down, but I don’t. Its upstairs and doesn’t stink up the house. If you keep the lid on the pail it doesn’t start to smell until laundry day once every 3 or 4 days. Give it a shot and just get a few prefolds and a cover or 2 (thirsties are great or kissaloves). It costs about the same to try cloth as it is to by a box of diapers.

Regarding cloth, I’d be willing to try but I know that the poops won’t really be ‘solid’ for a while (if they’re anything like my other son’s-boy this is a conversation I never imagined I’d be having-comparing my son’s poops). He’s still mostly on breastmilk and it will be a while before that goes away.

Naomi commented on Mar 03 11 at 10:44 am

I agree now might be the best time to switch to cloth. You know how I loved the fuzzi bunz!!!

Melissa commented on Mar 03 11 at 10:45 am

@Jenny- Unfortunately I live in a small one story house so closeting the stinky poops ‘upstairs’ is not an option for me. Also, our washing machine is not the best, I can imagine finding poop residue in there. How is doing the poop laundry? Do you have to pre-treat each diaper?

Naomi commented on Mar 03 11 at 10:47 am

@Melissa- I was thinking of you when everyone mentioned the cloth- but wouldn’t you agree with my post below- regarding the ‘solidness’ of the poops?

Naomi commented on Mar 03 11 at 10:52 am

I mean above, not below!

Naomi commented on Mar 03 11 at 10:53 am

I love disposable diapers and my son had the same problem with the Pampers Swaddlers sensitive so we switched to Pampers Cruisers in the same size and no problems. Different styles are cut differently so maybe just changing that will help you.

SoldierLover84 commented on Mar 03 11 at 12:17 pm

To carry on from Jenny: Unlike disposables, you can try cloth second hand, or try new and resell if things don’t work or for you.

My babe is still totally breast fed. I just rinse the poo nappies and squeeze them out before adding to the bucket. I keep the bucket right there in our bathroom and wash every two days. To be honest, I don’t even have the lid on properly most of the time so that I can easily toss nappies in while carrying a baby in one arm. I haven’t noticed a smell yet and, trust me, if it did smell, somebody would have told me by now. If not a friend, my mother definitely would have!

If you do decide to try cloth, keep in mind that they are not all made equal. I’d go with a multi-fit + covers system because it will contain the sloppy breastmilk poo and, apart from covers, you don’t need to buy anything when the time comes to size up. Once the Fuzz is on solids you could start to experiment with some of the cuter, all in one, or snap in sized nappies. Hmmmm…. I have lots of advice, but I’ll stop there because it’s not really what you asked about. I’m sure that, if the time comes, you ask for (and receive in multitudes) whatever advice you need/want.

Elissa commented on Mar 03 11 at 12:22 pm

I too use disposables (sigh). A few weeks ago we were having similar problems with our son at also about 19lbs. Constant blowouts up the back. We had him in size 3 Pampers Sensitive Swaddlers at home and size 3 Pampers Cruisers at daycare. (I sent these to daycare b/c I bought a big box and didn’t like them, and then found the sensitive swaddlers go up to bigger sizes the the regular.) Switched to Huggies Little Movers size 4 and haven’t had a blowout since. We are still using up size 3 diapers at home at times that I know it won’t be an issue – like another poster suggested. Good luck!

Pippa commented on Mar 03 11 at 1:09 pm

I know it’s not what you want to hear–but I have never had a single blowout in cloth (pee leaks are probably about equivalent–rare, but they do happen).

Poop was my main hesitation in trying cloth, but, it’s not a huge deal. Breastmilk poos can go straight to the pail–the washer really and truly will just dissolve it away. Solid poos need to be dumped in the toilet. For the 10 month stuff I’m dealing with now, like E said–it just kind of falls off. I would argue that dumping it into the toilet and flushing is a lot less work than running a super toxic smelling diaper to the outside trash. The semi solid stuff is the worst–I never sprang for a sprayer, I just gave them a quick dunk in the toilet. Which sounds gross, I know. But…it was only a diaper a day, at most, and so much easier (and less gross) than dealing with the aftermath of a blowout.

As far as pail smells–I have a fairly inexpensive pail from cotton babies, with a tight fitting lid, and a carbon filter, and it never smells, so long as tbe lid is on. When the lid is off, yep, it’s pretty smelly…but aren’t all diaper pails? Before the baby was born, I seriously fretted about the fact that the rocker was right next to the diaper pail, and that there would be smells. It has never been an issue.

So, for us, cloth is worth it. I buy maybe one case of diapers every 4 months for extended outings, when I want to use diaper rash cream, or for when we travel—even if you use cloth, you’re still allowed to use disposables! Cloth can be pricey to get started with, but even by now, they’ve paid for themselves. I figure every month we use them from here on out is bonus savings!

I too am a cloth diaperer. I started because of the same issue you are having. My son is just starting solids as well, and we use flushable diaper liners. They sell for about $8 for 200 liners, and are worth it. They’ve solved our pail stink (we live in a 600 sq ft efficiency at the moment), made on the go changes a breeze, given our ancient washing machine a break, and just made CDing even easier. Plus: no blowouts EVER.

Maybe this would help? http://www.pampers.com/en_US/diaper-size-tool I’m just now pregnant with my first, so I have no experience or advice to offer, but I stumbled across this calculator the other day. It lets you plug in weight, height, and age and tells you what size you need (in Pampers at least). So, maybe you can’t just look at weight, but have to look at the combination of weight and height to figure it out? Dunno. Hope this helps!

@Melissa- I thought you were talking about MY Fuzzy buns- but just realized you were talking about a product!

Naomi commented on Mar 03 11 at 1:39 pm

I had a nurse in the hospital tell me that when you start to have a lot of blow outs, it’s time to go up a size, and so far, that advice has worked for me and my 7 month old. Don’t worry about the weights listed on the packaging. And for goodness sake, what’s with all the people who just keep bringing up cloth diapers? She asked a question about disposables, folks. They are not evil, and for some of us like them better. : P

Amanda commented on Mar 03 11 at 2:12 pm

This mom is asking about disposables … it’s nice that so many of you use cloth – but some of us can’t because of daycare requirements. So why respond with “you should use cloth” ?

Jen commented on Mar 03 11 at 2:19 pm

Keep in mind that different diaper brands have very different cuts.

That said – we cloth diaper both kiddos – babe the elder from about a year on because that’s when his skin went absolute ape-stuff-crazy and babe the younger from birth on because her skin is even wilder. We do laundry every other day, use the flushable liners (because they’re no worse than TP), BTY is now on solids so her poo is getting easier to manage as we’re at quasi-turd stage as opposed to the liquid goop stage (although being BF it just went straight into the washer). I have a “sprayer” that I pieced together from random parts in our shop (I can get a parts list for anyone who wants to HD or Lowe’s it) and it helps too.

PlumbLucky commented on Mar 03 11 at 2:55 pm

I have found that the Pampers diapers blow out the top and the huggies out the legs. My daughter is long and slender with fat thighs (yum!). We find the Target brand diapers work best.

Also, going up a size will probably help. The weight thing is just a rough guidline. Can you return the box you just bought? Sometimes they take them back even if they’re opened. Or give them to women’s shelter or something.

SarahA commented on Mar 03 11 at 3:30 pm

The wash routine isn’t bad. You don’t need to pretreat the diapers. Just toss in the washing machine and let it rip ( I do 3-4 diff cycles). If you do not have an energy/water efficient washing machine your life will be even easier! The more water the better. The sites below have more detailed directions and the various diaper laundry detergent sites and cloth diaper company sites also have tips.
if you want to find out more about cloth diapers there are a lot of good blogs out there with great info. When I was reading up on cloth diapers I found the following sites to be most usefull: diaperpin.com – product reviews and tips
theclothdiaperwhisperer.com- clothdiaper blog and info site.
dirtydiaperlaundry.com- cloth diaper/ mom blog with video reviews

Just a thought, what if you put a cloth diaper cover over a disposable diaper to catch any blowout. You can get cd covers that have double leg gussets that are pretty leak proof and you could get one or two in really cute colors. When one happens to get dirty spray it off with a little soap and let it air dry or toss it in the dryer

Jenny commented on Mar 03 11 at 3:37 pm

We had to try a few different brands of disposables to find the ones that fit my daughter’s chunky little thighs and round backside the best. For us, the Huggies diaper-verse worked best, but friends with babies of different builds found different brands to work. Good luck!

Do they have 3/4s? I loved those in between sizes when M was in diapers.

Maggie commented on Mar 04 11 at 12:50 am

I would say size 3. My dd is 6 1/2months and is about 15 lbs. and she wears 2s.
