Help Me Choose a Double Stroller

doublestroller2 300x300 Help Me Choose a Double Stroller

E and J with little sisters C and G. It's hard to believe my two big kids were ever small enough to share a stroller. But they were!

None of my babies has much liked riding in a stroller until he/she could sit up and look around. Before that, they all liked a sling or front pack better. Thus, we have not yet even tried to put Baby G in a stroller. Of course, another reason is that we currently do not own a truly functional stroller; the one we were given as a wonderful shower gift before 3 year old C was born has now pretty much gone to stroller-heaven, after several years of very regular use.

But now that G is five months old, I figure it won’t be too long before she is sitting up, at which point I think I’d enjoy going for walks with both of my youngest girls – at the same time – around our neighborhood, which has good sidewalks and greenways.

At the moment, I cannot carry G in either our beloved sling or the frontpack because doing so would seriously aggravate my painful, baby-induced back problems.  So I am beginning to think about getting a new stroller – a double stroller. Jon and I are thinking we may even ask for one from the grandparents for Christmas.

I last had a double stroller when J and E were little (they are now 15 and 12 years old, respectively). They were born only 28 months apart, so we strolled them around together a fair amount, although at that time I wasn’t living in a walkable neighborhood, so the double stroller was mostly for shopping and such. It was some kind of basic side by side umbrella stroller, and it worked okay, I guess.  I have absolutely no idea what eventually became of it.

Since those ancient days, stroller design and options have come a loooong way, so there are many more double strollers from which to choose. It’s really a bit overwhelming to try to find one. So I figured I’d mention the criteria I have in looking for a double stroller, and maybe you smart blog-reading mamas can suggest some particular models and brands for me to check out. Or maybe you will tell me that the idea of getting a double stroller to accomodate a 36 lb 3 year old is a dumb idea. I don’t know. In any event, I welcome your input.

Here’s what (I think) I am looking for:

  • Under $300
  • Back to back, rather than side by side
  • Ability for each child to recline or sit up separately
  • Wheels that can handle rough city sidewalks with bumpy patches, etc
  • Folds relatively easily; does not weigh 6000 pounds
  • Wipe-clean fabric (as opposed to cotton or something that has to be removed and washed and then maddeningly re-stretched back onto the frame)
  • Five point harness that isn’t impossible to figure out, adjust or use
  • A nice basket would be a bonus
  • Drink holder would be excellent, but not a deal breaker

So what do you think? Does such a stroller exist? Do I even need a double stroller, with C getting so big? Tell me in the comments below what you like and dislike about specific brands and models of double stroller models . (I’ll let you know what Jon and I decide to go with.)

Help Me Choose a Double Stroller

What about a single stroller with a buggy board for C to ride on? That way the stroller would be useful to you for a longer time–since C is likely to be pretty much done with stroller-riding soon.

I got a BOB hand me down from my dad and ex step-mom that has a removable back seat. That might be a good option for you since you can either have it as a double or a single for when your 3 yr old is bigger. I don’t think it’s sold new anymore but I’m sure you could find it on ebay.

I’m ignoring some of your wish-list here. We have the Phil & Ted’s Sport stroller. (I think it’s more than $300 but there’s another model which is cheaper, I think). It isn’t perfect, but as my friends and I have discovered – none are. We all have multiple strollers which is really ridiculous since we live in a very hot island where there is very little paved sidewalk, so we hardly walk anywhere. Anyway, we bought the P & T’s as you can add a seat either at the front or behind the main seat for the older child. This extra seat isn’t adjustable, though. But I have travelled half-way around the world with it and the handling is really great – through airports with it laden down with bags I could still steer it one-handed. And the sun shade is brilliant (bought separately) – cuts out plenty of UV rays and protects baby from insects, if that’s a problem where you are. I haven’t used the second seat yet as the second baby is still gestating. I thought this might be worth looking at as you can use it as a single stroller if you want or add the seat for C. (Beware of the “hip” instruction manual and website – it’s a bit much, but the stroller has been great).

I think you still need a double stroller. I had one when my 2 youngest were about the ages you have now. First I had a double with them behind each other. HATED it! I didn’t like how long it was and it made it hard to see ridges or bumps in the road. Also it was heavy and hard to fold up. My second one was much lighter and they sat next to each other. The seats reclined, there was a basket underneath that I routinely packed to the max, a sun shield and a drink holder (which I never used.) I am much more of a sling and backpack mama but this was great for certain types of outings. I wish though that I could tell you the brand; I gave it to some folks last yr when we no longer needed it. If price was not an object, I would go with a double jogging style stroller as I had a single one (that I literally got from someone throwing it out) that we used for hiking. (one on my back one in the stroller)

Lee commented on Dec 14 10 at 12:49 pm

I think I’m missing something here. It sounds like you don’t have (and haven’t for some time) had a stroller for C. Why would you need a double one now? I ditched strollers about the time my kids turned 2. I know not everyone does this – but if you aren’t putting C in a stroller now, then you must be getting around with her some other way. Do you even know whether she’d like being in a stroller at this point?

We have a Maclaren, and I love it. after hassling with a POC evenflo stroller that matched the infant seat, I spent a lot of time when I was pregnant w/ #2 looking for a workable double. I would push the 2 seats in front of each other around before commiting, I hated the way it wouldn’t turn and was so long it was terrible to steer.

The MacCalren is a side by side, but narrow enough to go through a standard door. Also, it rides like a dream, and when you’re pushing combined weight of almost 80lbs, that says something.

I also love our single babytrend, it’s a jogging stroller so it has the bike wheels. They do make a double. and wile it’s big the bike wheels make it sooooooooo much nicer to steer and maneuver

Whatever you choose, take the time to go out and actually push the things around with both the girls in it. That’s the truest test of what will work for you and your family.

I’d recommend checking out the Baby Jogger City Mini. http://www.babyjogger.com/city_mini_lp.aspx

I have a single one that we’ve used since my son was born — it’s super-easy to fold and store, easy to turn and navigate and seats a child up to 50 lbs. They have double strollers as well, but given how old C is, you might be better off getting one of those attachments that she can stand on if she gets too tired on a walk. My little guy is 2-1/2 now and it’s still the only stroller we own (we lived in NYC until he was 18 mths, now in upstate NY).

KGP commented on Dec 14 10 at 1:24 pm

I have a Peg Perego with little footrests on the back so a tired toddler can stand and catch a ride. Mine have all preferred walking to riding by 3 so that has worked for all of mine and it is much easier than a huge double.

Kelly commented on Dec 14 10 at 1:36 pm

I was very lucky to be gifted with a gently used double graco stroller – Similiar to these:

http://www.gracobaby.com/Catalog/Pages/productlistingPage.aspx?catid=10:44||1+11:10447||1

But, it’s heavy.

I totally think one would still be very useful for you- I have a 3yr old and a 5mo old, too. Although the bigger one loves to walk and explore on her own, the stroller makes it very convenient at times. I think it would be much harder for me to manage them (and their two older siblings) on walks, while shopping, while traveling without one.

Clisby – We do have a stroller for C, and we used it all the time before G was born. But I mostly stayed indoors all summer (because I was pregnant and sad, and then because I had a premmie and was sad). This fall, we have taken C out in the stroller some, with G in the front pack or sling, but honestly, I haven’t been walking as much as we always did before Henry’s injury. Plus, the stroller we have for C is on its last legs. Jon and I realyl enjoy taking walks with the kids – for exercise and fun – and I am ready to start getting back into shape and out of the house more. So that’s why I am thinking of a double one. :-) – Katie

I recently bought a double stroller. I was convinced I wanted one back to back. While shopping around I talked to a salesperson who convinced me to buy a side by side (I didn’t buy from them), and I’m glad she did. It’s nice to have them next to each other and from the reserach I did, I could not find a back to back in which both seats reclined – at least not at a reasonable price. Another requirement for me was that an infant carrier car seat would fit, or you could get an attachment for it, since my daughter was still an infant when I bought it. We ended up getting the Peg Perego Aria – http://www.amazon.com/Peg-Perego-Aria-Twin-Stroller/dp/B002SZK7QM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1292351800&sr=8-1. Although not the best out there (it did have some negative reviews), for the price, I really like it. Both seats recline, it is VERY lightweight, it has two different size seats – one that is bigger than the other to fit two different size kids – fits the car seat perfect with no extra attachment needed, folds up very easy/locks in place, very easy to clean, has a pretty big basket in the back, and has a stand so that it can stand upright. My only complaints – which is something I read from others – is that the wheels squeek and the harness can come out easily. But I’ve read that you can put a litte WD-40 and they will be as good as new and someone wrote about a trick for keeping the harness in place. We bought it from a website that had no tax and no shipping so only cost around $267. This was another double stroller recommended to me by someone – but much more expensive (which is why we didn’t buy it): http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Jogger-City-Double-Stroller/dp/B002MZZJYI/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1292352858&sr=1-1

Ok, obviously, I am not a mama…yet, but I had my friends kids (2; ages 23 months and 1 month) for approx. an hour in this stroller at the mall… and I thought it was fabulous… and so does she. (Obviously, I wouldn’t be recommending anything if it didn’t have a real mama stamp of approval).

Katie, if you haven’t already, I’d really recommend going to a store and trying for yourself the back-to-back vs. the side-by-side. A double stroller is much more of a hassle than a single—there’s always trouble fitting through doorways (with the side-by-side, you’re too wide, with the back-to-back you’re too long to reach the door on your own and two sets of doors are a terror), turning corners (too fat/too long), etc.

That said, we used a lightweight, barebones side-by-side stroller with twins. (It’s been several years, but it was similar to Jeep Wrangler Twin Sport All-Weather Umbrella Stroller on Amazon—except ours had a basket under each seat.) For us, the pluses (it was lightweight, easier for me to maneuver, and eliminated the “I don’t want to sit in back” complaints) outweighed the minuses (mainly being too fat for some store aisles). And we used it with the boys until they were 5 or 6, so you’ll still get some good use out of it.

Good luck!

Katie, I have the Joovy Caboose sit and stand and if C is anything like my son who would ride in a stroller forever this is the one for you. It has the 5 point harness in the front for baby G and C can sit or stand on the back. My son who is now 5 and he still rides on this when we are going to the mall/amustment parks all that walking still makes their little legs tired. Once i got the hang of it it’s easy to open/close and not any heavier to me than a normal one kid stroller. I believe the stroller weight limit total is 95lbs. so you could be using it for awhile before both the girls hit that weight limit combined. Also it’s very reasonable price at $150 they do have a lightweight version for an addtional $50. The only down side is no cup holder but we bought the cup holder attachment..I actually bought it after reading a review on Babble and have been using it for over a year now so we used it with the carseat and now without i recommend it all the time because i like it so much.

Jessica commented on Dec 14 10 at 2:48 pm

Katie, you MUST check this one out. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4375719 I bought one a little over two years ago while pregnant with my fourth child (my children are 9,4,2, and 18 months) and I could not love it more. First off it meets all your requirements, is easy to collapse/unfold, stores easily in my teeny tiny mini van trunk and is availible in quite a few different colors and patterns. I have schlepped this thing everywhere, across pumpkin patch fields, down the sidewalks, through the mall and it has handled each surface with ease. The bottom cargo area is quite large and the handles are what sold me on the stroller, the two verticle handle bars are more than up to the task of hanging a purse, shopping bags, diaper bags and even coats during the winter. I saw other strollers with the same style bars but no cup holders. This one has two cup holders for mom, as well as a zippered storage pouch and each child has their own spot for both a sippy cup and also a seperate spot for a snack. Both childrens seats have a 5 pt. harness that is super easy to use, and both seats can recline. And since there is so much room between the front and rear child its more effort for the rear child (my youngest) to try to pull her older sisters hair in front. I seriously cannot endorce this stroller enough if you have any questions about other features it has I’d be happy to help.

We have a Knuckle head Jogging stroller. Weight limit is 75 pounds. I’d had a graco that our car seat carrier fit in perfectly; however, pushing it was a chore. I love that I can push it with one hand and hold onto the dog lease in the other. Five point harness system; however, no cup holders.

They do make a Knuckle Twin stoller.

Liza commented on Dec 14 10 at 3:02 pm

I would second the Joovy Caboose recomendation. I only have one child, so I have not yet faced this particular dilema, but a friend has this stroller and we’ve successfully used it for trips to the zoo, etc with her younger toddler on the rear seat, and my son in the front. Her son likes to walk, but at barely 3 he doesn’t lat through a whole day, so it’s been a God send. Also, she’s had it for a few years, and while it has some signs of wear, it’s still in very good condition. If we have another, this will be the first thing we buy! (If I can’t talk her out of hers by then!)

Andrea commented on Dec 14 10 at 3:04 pm

I got our Knucklehead stroller from Sierra Trading post online. I know they have had other brands in the past. Currently they have a Phil & Ted’s double one, but it’s a little spendy although STP does have a lot of online coupon deals if you sign up for their online newsletter…

Liza commented on Dec 14 10 at 3:05 pm

Personally, I think that C is getting too big to use a stroller; my son grew out of one before he hit 3. “Big boys don’t go in strollers” was his motto.

I have to admit that besides packing away our stash of cloth diapers, my saddest moment was realizing that I was probably never again going to use our Bugaboo. My father bought us a Frog when my daughter was born over 7 years ago, and despite using it every day for over 5 1/2 years, it is still almost brand new. It is a joy to use — it goes over every surface possible.

If you were on the same continent, I’d gift you with it… best suggestion is checking Craigslist or Ebay for a used one. We bought a boogie board for our daughter when our son was in it, and it worked out great.

Monika commented on Dec 14 10 at 4:01 pm

i have several strollers (for 3 kids)!

my double is a jeep, very basic, but lightweight, cheap (<$100 on sale) and easy to fold for day-to-day. no cup holders, the umbrella is useless, but again- does the job for quick errands.

my triple (yes- triple!) is pricey- but we LOVE it. we found ours on craigslist bc couldn't afford a new one. it's a valco tri-mode twin (it transforms into a triple with a toddler seat) LOVE it. but it's heavy and not easy to fold and may be tough on your back bc of how heavy it is. a huge plus for a side-by-side though is that it FITS THROUGH A STANDARD DOOR! if you do decide on a side by side- definitely look into that.

tracie d commented on Dec 14 10 at 4:10 pm

I have the Kolcraft tandem (same as one suggested above -and it’s awesome. The seats pop out and can be used facing mommy, facing each other or facing forward. The basket stretches the whole length of the stroller and it closes somewhat easily. You do have to pop off the seat to close it and it is a bit heavy. BUT it is very well made, navigates smoothly and really is wipe away clean. The hoods also pull forward very far and cover the little ones well. It is one of the best purchases we made and we have a 3 year old and 15 month old.

Stephanie commented on Dec 14 10 at 4:19 pm

Well I have a graco double stroller, but only the back seat adjusts, and it only has a 3pt harness. Other than that, I think it meets all your requirements! It’s easy to fold up, and doesn’t take up any more room than the single graco when folded, which is cool when you’re dealing with a smaller house. We love ours!

stephanie commented on Dec 14 10 at 4:29 pm

We were handed down a bugaboo, and did the rider board for our daughter once our son was big enough to stroll. They are 28 months apart. At three and a half our daughter was anti stroller. This month she wants to boot the 16 month old out and ride. He is all too happy to run into everything, so the bugaboo is back in rotation so the big girl can ride along. A good friend has three under 5 and splurged on the citi mini after the third was born. It is side by side, and she is really happy with it. You can snap the carseat in or sit the kids up next to each other. I have a friend with kids three years apart that love the Joovy, and others who hate it. The Phil and Ted’s is outrageously expensive. And I don’t know too many kids who like the back once they can look around. Good luck!

CAMAMA commented on Dec 14 10 at 4:31 pm

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Baby Jogger City Mini. We paid $400, which was (and still is) A LOT of money to us.

This stroller is side-by-side, but it fits through doorways and bathroom stalls. I think the side-by-side is better because both kids have a good view.

It’s so easy to push, even with my tall 3.5 year old son in it and on bumpy ground. Each side reclines separately and has its own shade.

It has a good size basket underneath and the back of each seat has storage. There is no cup holder, but I’ve learned to adjust.

I know some people think 3+ is too old for a stroller, but I disagree. My older son sits in it a lot, especially on long outings at the zoo or mall. And it allows me to take them out by myself because when my older son isn’t listening, I strap him into the stroller. Those sit and stand strollers would not have restrained my older son during a fit.

This stroller is our most expensive baby purchase ever because we bought second-hand baby furniture. But it was worth every penny.

Jill commented on Dec 14 10 at 5:24 pm

My advice is to skip the Kolcraft, Graco type strollers. They’re economical but I find them to be WAY bulkier and harder to manoeuver. I’ve found that the reason some strollers are pricier is because they’re simply better, not just because they hold Park Slope cache. Craigslist is your friend. You can get amazing strollers for a steal!
The best part of the new strollers with detachable ‘jump seat’ type things is that once C is too old to ride, you’ve still got a great single stroller for baby G instead of being stuck with a massive double containing only one occupant.

Awesome options:
Phil & Teds Vibe with doubles kit
Phil & Teds E3 with doubles kit
Britax B-Ready with second seat
Baby Jogger City Select with second seat kit
Peg Perego Skate with jumper seat
Bumbleride Queen B with toddler seat
Uppababy Vista with rumbleseat

I know that some of these exceed your price limit but honestly, ebay, craigslist etc are so worth it. A friend of mine got an immaculate Bugaboo on CL for $270.

I really hope that this helps

Capucine commented on Dec 14 10 at 7:21 pm

We wore out our double sit and stand ( back seat could be a seat or folded down to make a bench. I loved it, and did a lot of walking on city streets and park trails with it. My kids were 18 months apart…then we had #3 18 months later, and continued using it til it collapsed from overuse when our last was just under 18 months.

We also have a double BOB…best investment ever! I got it from REI on sale with free shipping. I put my 18mo and my 3 yo in the seats, and my 4 1/2 yo rides on the front in the foot area. Yes, my almost 5 yo still rides in the stroller…bring on the criticism. I can steer all 3 kids and a load from the farmers market with 1 hand. The stroller is pricey, big, and heavy, but it is awesome.

El commented on Dec 14 10 at 7:47 pm

I have a Phil and Ted’s jogger and the additional part to turn it into a doubler. Love the stroller. Lighter in weight by far than other joggers I was looking at. I had to add a cup holder to mine, and I haven’t had a chance to double it yet, but I liked that it is an option and can left off if not needed. It is taking longer to have a second baby, so it might not be needed, in which case I am still happy with my light jogger. PS, my Graco car seat fit with it really well. It didn’t snap in place but sat very securly in the stroller, so we used that as a travel system a lot. Good storage underneath, but you loose that with the doubler seat. I jog with it and steer one handed. Reclines all the way, so it has doubled as a portable crib on occasion, too. My everyday umbrella is a CHicco. LOVE LOVE LOVE that for single, small and easy, but still handles well.

Cheryl Burchett commented on Dec 14 10 at 9:51 pm

Katie, I researched for hours/days/weeks before picking out a double — so hard to choose! But I am going to second Jill and HIGHLY recommend the Baby Jogger City Mini Double. It is side-by-side and $400, BUT it really works fantastic on almost every other way you said. Narrow enough to fit through doors (even our narrow front door) and store aisles, easy to collapse, not heavy at all for throwing into the trunk (and it folds amazingly flat), five point harnesses, and great sunshields. Each seat reclines almost to flat with mesh for letting air through the back if it’s hot, but a little cover to keep the wind from blowing straight through when it’s cold. It pushes really easily through neighborhoods, parks, and zoos — you really can steer it with one hand and it turns great. My 2YO is 33 pounds, and my 4MO is already almost 19 pounds, but I can still push this pretty easily and both boys are comfortable. The basket won’t fit your diaper bag but individual items fit great, and I bought a generic cupholder attachment for about $15 from a store that works perfectly.

I really was on the fence about the cost, but like Jill I bought pretty much all other baby stuff second-hand or received some as gifts. This purchase was definitely worth it — I have used it pretty much every single day since we bought it months ago to walk to the park or at the mall. (When it came down to it, I decided for this over the BOB Duallie, because it was much cheaper and I knew I’d be walking, not jogging!) Hope that helps.

Kim commented on Dec 14 10 at 10:01 pm

I rented a Baby Jogger City Mini for a week long visit to Vancouver last summer for my 22 month old and 2 month old (at the time), and I absolutely loved it! It steered great, collapsed remarkable easily, and I had no trouble getting it through doors. I was really impressed by the sun shade, it actually provided really good coverage. We didn’t rent a car so we walked and bussed everywhere with this baby, and by the end of the week I wanted to take it back home with me.
Happy Stroller shopping! the selection out there is overwhelming, good luck :)

JessiR commented on Dec 14 10 at 10:30 pm

You should definitely check out the joovy caboose! C will feel like a big girl hitching a ride, without slowing you down. It is a great compromise without the cumbersomeness of a double stroller that you might really only use for 6 months.

sara commented on Dec 14 10 at 10:42 pm

I had two kids, with similar ages to yours. I had a back to back stroller and hated it. Impossible to turn, impossible to push uphill, very bumpy and when you enter stores, well you can’t, because your arm is not long enough to hold the door and push the stroller in at the same time, you need someone to hold the door for you. And forget about turning around or even 90 degrees on a sidewalk. The back to back ones are not good when you two kids with different weights, although they work better with twins.

Maclaren side by side: very compact, folds into a double umbrella, comfy, good shade, not a great basket, and no, no cup holder. I liked it a lot. Here’s the one I had http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4350290
It’s pricey, so if you want you can go with the “triumph” version instead of “techno” which is a little better with suspension.

Or go with a lightweight jogging stroller, not because you will necessarily jog, but they are great at steering and have those large wheels fit for bumps. Like this:

lolismum commented on Dec 14 10 at 10:55 pm

We had a Phil & Ted’s Vibe, which is an inline double, and we HATE IT. I spent $600 on that junk and we are looking to resell now. It steers terribly, and neither seat is very comfortable for the wee ones. Everyone I have talked to has said that a side-by-side is the way to go. If I had it to do over (and possibly I will one day if someone wants to buy the P&T), I’d get a side-by-side Maclaren double. They’re narrow, lightweight, super easy to steer, and comfy for both kids.

If you have the time/ability, I’d hit a BRU or similar and do some test driving! This was one of the most convoluted decisions we made and I know if I had the ability to actually TRY OUT the strollers, I’d have known right away the P&T wasn’t for me. Amazon.com reviews also do not help, so don’t read them if you can help it. It will just spin your head in circles. Ask me how I know. :P

Tasha commented on Dec 14 10 at 11:28 pm

The stroller you want does not exist. That said, we have (had) two double strollers that I absolutely loved. The every day stroller, which was perfect for the extremely bumpy sidewalks around our city home, was the Valco Tri-Mode Twin. This thing is DA BOMB. It does fold easily, but it does weigh a fair amount. But it blew my BoB (single) out of the water for ease of use and it fit easily through a regular doorway, which is difficult with the side by side double. We used it from day one with our newborn and then 2 year old. We sold it this summer and bought a stroller bike instead, and I really regret it. That was the best stroller ever, and we walked every day. It was pricey but we got ours on craigslist for less than half the retail price. The other double stroller that I looked at seriously was the Phil & Ted.
Our other double stroller is the Joovy Caboose. This is our “car” stroller. It’s a sit and stand – really, a sit and sit. Perfect for a three year old, although my three year old likes to sit in the part with the tray, which is up front. It’s a back to back seating arrangement when the seat part is pulled out. Folds super fast and is very light. Not great on bumpy sidewalks, though – at least, our bumpy sidewalks, because it has regular old stroller wheels, not pumped up ones. Be sure to buckle baby into the front – I was lazy a couple of times and didn’t do it, and I don’t know if it was his lazy attitude or something about the angle of the stroller, but he nearly fell out (twice)! Seriously, though, a great, reliable and affordable stroller. Comes with a cup holder, both for you AND for whoever sits up front. Also, I think, comes with a rainboot. Good brand.

I was you a few years ago. I tried the Graco duoglider, side-by-side jogger, bike trailer with stroller attachment, and the baby trend sit n stand. The way to go is the Joovy with the little jumpseat in the back. It’s not really bigger than a standard stroller but the older sibling can catch a little ride when she wants to. I thought it was necessary for the back jumpseat to be full-size but found that the big kid usually wants to stand and ride or sit for short spurts. Not worth the extra size of the sit n stand or the duoglider. The other, larger options are such hogs that I sometimes felt embarrassed – like I was pushing the Hummer of strollers through the farmers market or wherever.

No one’s mentioned the Combi double! I love it. http://www.strollers.com/Combi-7769-CBI1400.html It’s a side-by-side but otherwise, it fits all of your criteria REALLY well. It’s the lightest double I could find aside from a true win umbrella but still fairly sturdy. It’s less than $200 (we bought our’s online at strollers.com & were amazed by their customer service; they actually talked us out of spending more money on shipping!). The seats velcro off & are machine washable (no stretching the covers to fit back on the frame. Just velcro on/off.) It’s got a decent basket, the seats recline independently with 5 point harnesses & the kids have drink holders (no drink holder for the grown-ups though.) Basically, aside from the back to back, it fits all of your requirements. Our kids are 2 years 10 months apart. We got the stroller around the time that our oldest was 3 & a few months. We don’t use it a ton, but it has been a lifesaver when I take the two out somewhere by myself — like, say, a mall at Christmas time. It was absolutely vital when we were traveling to be able to keep our older one contained & now, our older one doesn’t mind riding in it to be a good role model for her younger sister who wants to get out & run around. If you’re a frequent long-walker as you said you were, I think it could be a good fit without going up to the jogging models (which usually entail a lot more weight/cost). Happy shopping!

I don’t know why my comment didn’t make it through moderation, but while I can’t rewrite my whole post, I did want to second Jill’s recommendation of the City Mini Double. Hands down worth the cost. Narrow enough to fit through most doors, lightweight, super easy to push around the neighborhood, both seats recline and have good sunshades, etc. My kids are 33 and 19 pounds and they both fit pretty comfortably. Definitely try putting the girls in this one at the store to see if you like it. We use it every single day.

Have you seen this stroller? It is great for winter/snow too and they have both singles and doubles. There is a give away going on right now, so you can enter to win a free one!

http://www.stroller.ca I haven’t seen anything like it!

Seriously, y’all are awesome! Thank you so, so much for all these great suggestions to check out, and for helping me think about some issues I hadn’t even considered. xo – Katie

Do you have an Ergo or other SSC? I can’t do slings or frontpacks because of back pain, but can carry my very large kids for long, long times in a good back carry where the weight is distributed over my shoulders and hips. I love my Ergo but there are other great SSCs that have come out in the past 5 years.

As for double strollers, the Joovy doesn’t allow the older kid to sleep at all, so while it is great for some things that is a major limitation. We love, love our second hand Phil & Ted’s. While other commenters say kids don’t like the back seat (or either seat) our kids FIGHT over the back seat and all the families we know that have a P&T love it. The back seat doesn’t recline but many a child has napped in it in our stroller. The main seat does recline but you can’t recline it much with the other seat in use. We also use it for trips to the farmer’s market because you can really load up the lower seat/storage area if you’ve only got 1 kid riding (that’s where the Ergo comes in handy)!

I personally can’t stand side by side doubles because even if they are narrow enough to go through doors, they’re still more difficult to navigate with on crowded sidewalks, narrow store aisles, and forget taking them on the subway!

I say P&T all the way, but try out as many different strollers as you can at a store and then look for second hand ones on craigslist and any other sources. I found ours by emailing the elementary school listserv and found a family whose kids were done with strollers and were happy to sell theirs.

Do NOT, I repeat, NOT get that Kolcraft tandem stroller. It looks good but it’s very rickety and mine fell apart within months. The company does NOT care.

Total loss. They sent me replacement pegs, didn’t even get here for nearly a month, and couldn’t tell me why this happened in the first place. Do. Not. Get. It.

My sister gave me a Joovy Caboose and I love it. I have to be very vigilant with Penny to keep her holding on, but better that than the false sense of security I had with this POS.

HI,

I highly recommend the Combi double, side by side. We have used it for two kids 26 months apart, they are now 14 months and 3.5 years and I still get use out of it (though admittedly the older one is using it less and less. Actually last week they both fell asleep in it whilst out for a stroll). It is light, very easy to move around and the best bit is one handed steering! Or maybe the ease of folding and moving around when not filled with kids? Plus it is half the price of the Maclaren double. We bought ours on Amazon.

Good luck.

I have the Joovy Caboose and find the handling HORRIBLE if you are not on a smooth tile floor. I took my 2 kids in it to the zoo and was miserable. The wheels are essentially the same as those on a cheep umbrella stroller. I do still use it, and love it, for the mall or other smooth flat surface. Although now my kids are old enough to fight over who gets to stand vs. sit. I loooove my BOB double stroller though for more active use. It is worth the money we spent on it, and I would guess you might be able to find one locally on craigslist for less than 300. I know it is side by side, but it does fit through a standard doorway. And if you are considering walking for exercise on sidewalks or groomed trails, I HIGHLY recommend looking at one with the more all-terrain wheels (BOB, phil & teds, etc…)

Good luck!!!

DO NOT get the Phil & Ted strollers–they are awful!! No stroller is perfect, but there has to be better ones than this. I hate mine. The only nice thing about it is that it’s narrow & the size of a single stroller so I don’t feel like I’m driving a boat, & it acts as a snap n go with my infant seat, but otherwise, it is soooo overpriced, the cheap brake on it is impossible to use, its difficult for my older child (who’s a very small 2) to get in the bottom seat. The sun shade is Jon existent so you have to buy an extra one as well as a cup holder. It’s heavy & difficult to maneuver. Their customer service is horrendous, it took me two phone calls & 30 minutes on hold to talk to someone who was rude. One of tires has deflated three times in six months so I kept getting new proprietary inner tube replacements only to discover the actually rim was bent. I’ve never taken it anywhere except smooth city pavement so it either came like this or it’s cheaply made & I can’t imagine it handling rough terrain.

So yeah. Please don’t waste your money on this peice of caca’

I have two boys 15 months apart (2 1/2 and 16 months) and we searched high and low for a double stroller. We came up with a Valco Baby Twin Tri-Mode and LOVE IT! When our little one was in his carseat, we bought the adapter to fit the VB. Regular footmuffs fit it, so there’s no need to get expensive ones. It’s super for outdoors because the tires are air-filled and it’s a much smoother ride. We looked and considered a P&T’s, but I wasn’t crazy about how the smaller child rides so close to the ground (we thought he would get splashed by puddles/rain/snow). Do note that most side-by-sides are made to fit through any doorway. Granted, it’s not easy, but they do fit. I have seen many strollers with the ride-on step for older kids, but if you’re doing a lot of walking, you may want to go with a true double. Look in consignment shops; Craigslist; “Mom Boards”; etc…for some good deals. We didn’t like the Maclaren because there isn’t any “bar” holding the kids in the stroller, just harnesses and the fact that the kids’ feet are just dangling made it seem uncomfortable. Plus, it’s a little chintzy for outdoor use. Yes, you can stroll around the mall with it, but take it outside and it just doesn’t seem too comfortable to me.
Just our two cents…It’s not an easy decision, so take your time and go and try these things out wherever you can. Do test rides. Do what you need to feel comfortable about buying it. It’s a whole lot of money.
It’s kind of like the list of things you wanted in a diaper bag, right? You may have to give up one thing that’s not too important (you can always get a cup holder as an add-on) to get something that truly is important.
Good Luck!

I am so curious, what did you finally go with? The selection and experiences out there are pretty amazing…
