Baby (not mine) in a Woombie

Remember about a month ago when I blogged about how much G loooooves to be swaddled? Well, since then, she’s had a little growth spurt (she turned four months old yesterday) and as of about a week ago, I started noticing that our beloved Miracle Blanket just wasn’t cutting it anymore. Her feet have started poking out of the end, and she’s gotten better able to flail herself free during the night, no matter how firmly I wrap her.

What to do?? She still totally needs to be swaddled in order to sleep well (remember that even though she’s 16 weeks old, she was born 6 weeks early), but without the Miracle Blanket, I didn’t know what I would do. Then I remembered the odd looking swaddle sack that a friend had sent me as a baby gift when G was born.  The thing is called a “Woombie”.

Desperate to figure out how to keep G swaddled sans Miracle Blanket so we could all get some sleep again, I got the Woombie out and decided to give it a try.  I zipped G up into the cute, yellow, organic cotton Woombie that my friend had sent. The fabric is of very high quality and it’s both soft/ cottony and stretchy. It’s also very breathable.  I have the newborn 5-13 pound Woombie and at 16 weeks, it fits G great (she’s on the small side).  She definitely looks like a human peanut in her Woombie, but WOW, she settled right down and clearly loves the thing. Now she’s been happily sleeping in it for the past few nights.

This thing is definitely a bit of baby genius. It allows a bit more movement than the Miracle Blanket (because it’s stretchy), which is perfect for a baby past the newborn stage who wants to wiggle a bit.  Yet it still keeps the baby swaddled nicely so she feels cozy and secure and she can’t startle herself awake, as many babies still do at 5,6 and 7 months of age.  It’s super easy to get on and off – no complicated wrapping.  The Woombie is kind of like Swaddling 2.0. Because we didn’t discover the joys of the Woombie until recently,  the single, newborn-sized Woombie we have for G is going to be too small pretty quickly. I definitely want to get the next size up (maybe two of them so one is always clean) .

I rarely discover a new bit of baby gear that I find as wonderful as this one. I’d honestly never heard of Woombie before being gifted with one, but now I suspect I’ll be giving them as gifts to friends myself.  If you have a baby who hasn’t done well with swaddling, or has outgrown her Miracle Blanket, or if you have found the whole swaddle wrapping thing too tricky to figure out, I would definitely give the Woombie a try.

Five stars. Highly recommended.

I am desperate to find a swaddle product that works for my 8 week old who hates being swaddled! Miracle blanket was not a miracle for us. She absolutely fought it like a banshee, and also managed to get herself unwrapped. I have to swaddle her when she’s already asleep because she hates it so much, and so far the kiddopotamus swaddle me worked the best because it was easy to put on. The Woombie thing just might work for us because, as much as my baby hates having her hands bound, she still flails herself awake on occasion. And it looks less constricting somehow.

My Julia started “breaking out” of her swaddle at 3 months despite the fact that she still really, really needed it to sleep. Our solution was the “double swaddle” – traditional nurse swaddling using a large aran and anais blanket, then covering that with the swaddle me.

Kind of insane, but it worked! :)

Katie, I have to tell you – the Woombie was a lifesaver for us! My daughter started breaking out of the Miracle Blanket at about 2 months of age and I was DESPERATE to find something that would hold her! Without being swaddled, she would wake up after 60 seconds. In my frantic Googling, I came across the Woombie and ordered it – with express shipping! She immediately took to it and ended up using it until almost 7 months of age. Finally, we had to wean her off of it because she was getting annoyed that she couldn’t use her hands to put her pacifier back in. But I seriously loved that thing – even if my husband did call her a Lexiewurst because she looked like a sausage!

Ok, that is just adorable. I use the kiddopotamus swaddle mes in summer and winter weight- I might just have to try that as well!

NOW you tell me … now that the twins are going on 3 yrs old!! When they outgrew their Miracle Blankets, we needed this!

Wow – what a cool idea! My son needed to be swaddled well into his 9th month and he is off the charts huge. We had to make a “straight-jacket” out of one of my husband’s old shirts and then wrap him in half of a bed sheet. He looked silly, but slept great! I will definitely look for this for #2…

I just discovered the Woombie on-line, myself and I was disappointed that I didn’t know about it when my now toddler was an infant (she needed to be swaddled up to 7 months). I’m pretty sure, though, that it is a relatively new product. I’m looking forward to using it with our next baby!

I have been swaddling my sweet girl from the day she arrived home and after one week was sleeping through the night. We have tried all kinds of swaddling products, but once I found woombie, I threw the others away. She is now 7 mo and in a megababy size woombie, even for naps. She calms down immediately when we zip her up and has no question its time for sleep. I realize I can’t woombie her forever! Please, looking for any ideas/advice/techniques for weening!!!!
