My Top 9 Favorite Kids’ Books of All Time

As I may have mentioned, I think reading is one of the most important things you can do with your kids. For me, being read to as a kid took the place of a college education. Seriously, I graduated high school with a GPA of 2.3. But don’t worry, I made up for it by not joining a single extra curricular activity. So, despite having carte blanche to any community college in the greater Springfield, Mass area, I still chose to forge on ahead to Los Angeles and skip over what may have ended up being the best two years of my life.
I would like to think that my kids will go to school, but just in case, I make sure they never miss a night of bedtime stories. Even if I’m reeeeally tired. I know. I’m pretty great.
And since I have to read them, I also need to enjoy them. I recently gave you my list of least favorite books, so here now are my favorite books (that I’ve discovered thus far). I’d love to hear yours! I haven’t listed much past the seven-year-old range so stayed tuned for another list which will include Charlotte’s Web and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (which for some unknown reason always makes me think of the restaurant Fuddruckers -why is that?)

Please don’t call CPS. Please consider the fact that I was raised by foreigners who read me books in their (and I guess also my) native tongue.
Because of them, I also didn’t know the words to ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’ and ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ and had to Google them when I had my first child. I can conjugate like nobody’s business in French though and know some wonderful songs, including one about a little man who fell down the stairs and broke his nose.
Obviously I had a very deprived childhood and will now hit Amazon.com to order these.

My now-five year old loved all of her books, and they were fun to read, and the perfect length for short attention spans. Not to mention adorable illustrations. Both my son and I were particularly fond of “Hippos Go Berserk,” and even at five, he will still recite the whole thing at times.
You’re right on about Mo Willems. We’re on a Piggie and Gerald kick right now.

Anything by Robert Munsch is great too especially if you listen along with him reading on his website. My daughter is only two but I had to advance our reading a bit because I hate cutesy baby books!!!

In case I’m off on that name, it’s the author of The Gruffalo, Room on a Broom, Zog, Charlie Cook’s Favorite Book, The Whale and the Snail, etc. Not to toot our own horns, but often my husband and I get annoyed with “children’s books” and feel like we could write something similar (and we’re not writers ;). But these books are definately not ones we could write. Cute, clever and rhyme-y and although some may exceed a kids’ head depending on age, really good messages in the stories or clever twists and such.
Kristin commented on Feb 20 12 at 10:00 pmSylvester and the Magic Pebble is my favorite. I love that everyone is a barnyard animal, and that when the parents go to the police, they are pigs. Too cute. And the illustrations are so beautiful. I remember being moved to my childish core by this story.
