Tech the Halls
Posted December 14th, 2011 at 2:42 pm
This post is #4 in a four-part series sponsored by Dell. Leave a comment for a chance to win a Dell Inspiron One 2320 Touch computer! See end of post for details!
…And no I will not stop with the holiday tech puns thankyouverymuchsir! They are my new boyfriend. But this is the last in the series of holiday tech posts so you’re off the hook for the rest of the year. Maybe.
In the meantime, let’s talk about tech, bay-bee. Specifically which gadgets you’ll be purchasing (or perhaps, if you aren’t a last minute shopper like I am, already purchased) and which items you’ll be steering clear of these next ten days.
I happen to have one major tech item on my list but I will not be disclosing here BECAUSE Mr. Childssss reads this blog. Instead I’ll be listing what I WON’T be purchasing and a few things on my wish list.
First, the wishes:
1. Speakers for my IPOD: Somehow I have managed to go my entire life without these things. I recently saw this gramophone dock in an Anthropologie catalog and died a little bit.

It was 78798243 dollars but so cute I tucked it away in my thoughts/became obsessed with it. (It’s no longer for sale apparently, which is a bummer and also a relief for my credit card.)
2. Sound Machine so Baby Sleep Happens: Thanks to your suggestions, one is on the way. Thanks, Santa Moms!
3. Photoshop: I have been dragging my feet on this. For five years. (See also IPOD speakers. What’s my problem?)
Annnnnnd the not-so-wish list:
1. Cell phones for my kids: Every time I pick Archer up from school another kid is standing outside on a cell phone. WHAT IN THE WHAT, YOU ARE EIGHT YEARS OLD!??? WHO ARE YOU CALLING!??? Not that anyone is asking for a cell phone YET but boy would my kids love an iphone or two to play games on. Luckily, I have Santa’s number and have already told him EN. OH.
2. Video Game Console: Although every year I’m tempted to buy a wii or an XBOX or whatever the newest consul of amazingness is, I always opt out. One of these days we’ll likely buy one (Fable would LOVE the dance games and Archer would flip for the bowling and arcade) but for now, board games is where we’re at on family fun nights. And I’m not ready to let them go.

3. 3D Glasses: Unfortunately, Hal already went there. And no, we never (ever) use them. I mean… does anybody? Seriously. Can we talk about 3-D glasses for a second? Is anyone out there honestly putting them to use?
***
What about you guys? What technological gadgetry will you be purchasing this holiday season and/or NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT steering clear of? Leave a comment below for a chance to win a Dell Inspiron One 2320 Touch computer! (It doesn’t HAVE to be about your fantasy holiday app, btw, although I’d love to hear them.)

kenzie commented on Dec 14 11 at 3:59 pmI agree … there are parts of my life and traditions that I would like to keep relatively tech-free.
We do not have a television, but I can find just about anything I need on Youtube! Kids love it when I type in things such as “laughing baby”. Gives them the giggles!
And I am quite behind the times, but I do not have an ipod! Perhaps an ipod would be a good idea so I can create playlists for my kids at school.
Roxanne commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:06 pmTech gadget I’d love to get is an updated iphone, and I’ll be staying away from the video game consoles. I’ve never been a video game fan. Although my friend just got an XBOX and wants me to try some exercise/dancing thing with her. Might be interesting?
Jayme commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:10 pmI’m with you on the cell phones for little people. My nephew has one, and he’s 10. And it has caused nothing but headaches for my sister and BIL. So no smalls under the age of say, oh I don’t know, 16, will ever get a cell phone gifted to them from me. I’m sure I have YEARS of nagging and pouting and storming outs ahead of me.
jana commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:11 pmWe are a tv-free family, so every year a tv is on both lists…maybe it would be nice, this year, to be able to watch baseball at home! But also maybe it would be awful to have the constant temptation of television keeping me from work, reading, and actually interacting with my kids…
Erin commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:15 pmNo tech for us this year but my oldest would love a wii. And DH would love a laptop. Me? A nook or kindle and a gift card to buy books.
Merry Christmas!
liz commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:16 pmI’m really feeling an iPad this year… That is going in my letter to Santa!
Anna commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:20 pmI never saw the point of having an iPad or other tablet device, but I’m recently out of work and doing the daytime “coffee shop office” thing, and boy is my laptop heavy to lug around all day! So an iPad would be my holiday tech wish.
Kim commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:35 pmMy fiance got his mom a photo scanner thing so she can easily digitize years worth of family photos :) And my sisters and I got my mom a Kindle. And…I think that’s it for gadgetry!
kathryn commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:36 pmNo holiday tech this year…although I’d LOVE an ipad…Dh and I purchased an elliptical and a treadmill for our christmas gifts. :)
Amy commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:36 pmI think the only technology-related thing I’m purchasing is a book for my daughter on my Kindle. She has a million real books, but this will be a little easier for us to carry outside if the house.
Amy commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:39 pmI’m so glad you’re holding off on tech stuff for the kids. I don’t think they are bad for kids, just unnecessary, especially for the really young ones who don’t seem to need much at all to entertain themselves.
I think my husband might just love that ipod dock because it looks ancient and he pretends to want to live in earlier, simpler times.
Sara T. commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:41 pmFor years (easily the last 7-8), I have been quietly coveting the Canon EOS Rebel digital SLR cameras. As an engagement present (3+ years ago), my best friend/maid of honor bought me a new, pocket-sized point-and-shoot digital camera. So I swore I wouldn’t even think twice about the SLR digital cameras until I started having kids. Cut to summer 2011, when I gave birth to my 2nd child and three weeks later, my brother bought his wife the camera of MY dreams (and he even asked me for help picking it out). My quiet coveting turned into loud noisy rambunctious coveting for several months, and finally on Black Friday, my husband let me buy the Canon EOS T3i Digital Rebel camera. Santa came early to my house this year, in the form of a husband who didn’t complain of a large credit card bill.
Sarah commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:42 pmI stay away from the tech purchases and head straight to the sentimental. I am DYING for Christmas to be here already and am soooo looking forward to the look on my boyfriend’s face when he opens the box with the title to the light blue 1965 VW Beetle I bought him. Eeee!!! His father passed away when he was very young and his grandfather filled the role by having him work at his VW repair shop from his early years until high school. For his 16th birthday they spent an entire year rebuilding a blue 1965 Beetle that the bf sold in college and has always regretted. D-Y-I-N-G for Christmas to just get here already :-)
Amber commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:44 pmFirst, give me that ipod speaker. How sweet is that? The most tech savy thing on my wishlist this year, is a record player. I have a box of wonderfully old records, but nothing to play them on. Sad. And I refuse to let my kids grow up without ever hearing a record.
Danielle commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:45 pmI broke down and got the xbox 360 Kinect, it looks AWESOME and no controllers! Woo-hoo! My kids always have iphone on their list, and they are 4 and 7! Hello! No way Jose! We are a tech-obsessed family so I can understand why, but I think they really just want them for the games.
megg-o-mite commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:52 pmI have to say, as a mother with a newly diagnosed child (autism) – the ipad is the queen of our mason jar fund. Touch-ANYTHING – is key for the little one right now.
Jenny K commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:56 pmhappy holidays!
lonek8 commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:58 pmI REALLY want some sort of speaker system for my ipod too – we no longer have any kind of stereo at all, and listening/ dancing to music with my kids just isn’t as fun from a laptop. That gramophone dock is sick so I’m glad it isn’t available anymore. I think for now I’ll probably go with something cheap. I’ve also thought about getting my daughter her own CD player or ipod so she can listen to music in her room. it probably won’t happen this Christmas, but maybe for her birthday in a couple of months. I’d also love to get my husband a new laptop because his is literally a piece of junk, and while we’re at it mine is probably on it’s last legs, but again, unless Santa brings me a fat wad of cash, those gifts are going to have to wait for next year.
Sadie commented on Dec 14 11 at 4:59 pmActually there are no high tech gadgets going under our tree this year. It was all about musical instruments this year. My son did get a Leap Pad for his birthday a couple weeks ago, and he loves it. Highly recommended.
Julia commented on Dec 14 11 at 5:02 pmMy husband finally listened to my years of whining and we bought a Nook Tablet (ok, so it started as a whinefest about the Nook and has evolved over time) as my Christmas gift this year. Just 11 more days until I can play!
Katrina commented on Dec 14 11 at 5:07 pmI’m dying for a new laptop. Mine is 6+ years old and on it’s last leg. Santa, do you hear me!?
Siaci commented on Dec 14 11 at 5:12 pmI purchased a new mp3 player, because I wanted more songs for a long holiday trip. No giant tv’s and home theater systems for me. Wen I hang with my peeps, I like to talk to them. We never go to movies together, so why do it at home?
Crystal commented on Dec 14 11 at 5:23 pmWell we werent planning on this but timing isnt always great ..a new computer and a new cellphone….existing ones broke at same time.
Summertime commented on Dec 14 11 at 5:27 pmI would love a new iphone. I’m on the first first first gen one, still. Someone at a coffee shop the other day goes, “oh cool, a vintage iphone!” Not that I care about that part, but my apps are starting to not work and that sucks.
Diana commented on Dec 14 11 at 5:33 pmIm getting that noise machine – was so happy you asked that, since we need some kind of white noise, and the iPhone apps arent cutting it. If only I could put our washer and dryer in our bedroom – that’s always good .,. But no, I think the macine will be the easier choice.
Otherwise, we have so much, my husband loves all tech. What I do NOT want is anything electronic for our now 8 week old. Hopefully, that has come across to the plethora of grandparents and step-grandparents…
Lisa T commented on Dec 14 11 at 5:34 pmWe are getting our middle school aged son a laptop(very inexpensive one) and are really have second thoughts about the “necessity” of it…time will tell if it was a good or bad decision ;) Happy Holidays!
stephanie commented on Dec 14 11 at 5:34 pmNo hi-tech gadgets for us. Funds are low, but I would love to win the computer since my husband is taking our home computer to work. No fun for this SAHM.
Nicole Barnard commented on Dec 14 11 at 5:51 pmI’d love decor to fill my new and empty home. Oh yea and a decorator to push me in the right direction as well!
Love!
Kim commented on Dec 14 11 at 6:18 pmI bought myself a 46″ TV a few months ago so no new tech gadgets for me this Christmas! I could seriously do some damage on clothes though!
jillian silva commented on Dec 14 11 at 6:43 pmI was diagnosed with stage II colon cancer the end of October. I had surgery to remove the tumor and was fully expecting chemo and radiation. When I went to my oncology appointment a couple of weeks ago, I was told that everything went so well with my surgery and pathology results, that I didn’t need chemo or radiation. That was the best Christmas present that I have ever had!
sara commented on Dec 14 11 at 6:44 pmNo electronics on my list!! ZERO thankyouverymuch.
Amber commented on Dec 14 11 at 6:46 pmWell this year, as our family gift….we asked Santa an Xbox and the Kinect attachment, along with a dance game for the older set, and a toddler dance game.
Vicki commented on Dec 14 11 at 6:56 pmNew to you and your blog….<3 it! My wish list would also include photoshop and a laptop.
Diana commented on Dec 14 11 at 8:00 pmI hope to never purchase a giant plasma crazy expensive TV gadget! We just take free/cheap hand me down TVs. I think I’d like to try out a Kindle or something like that, but probably not this year.
Erin J. commented on Dec 14 11 at 8:37 pmI’ve gotten techy things the last few years…and guess what, never really used them. So now, I say no thank you..give me food/treats/baked goods instead (I’m 8 month pregnant so that may be a factor in the food obsession). I would dig an ipad though, but that will stay on my wishlist for awhile.
Rebe S. commented on Dec 14 11 at 8:41 pmI’d really like a Kindle! Or a free computer!
April commented on Dec 14 11 at 9:20 pmI would like to buy a TV. I havent had one in years and kind if miss it!
shannon commented on Dec 14 11 at 10:26 pmThe only tech-y thing I bought this year is the Hot wheels video racer for my kiddos. I have a new computer on my list, but Santa doesn’t buy for the adults in our house so . . .
Billie commented on Dec 14 11 at 10:29 pmYeah Jillian! I’m so happy for you!! I’m searching for a solar powered charger for our iPhones. Apparently they don’t make good ones!
laura commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:51 amYou’ll laugh.. but the super high tech gadget I’ll be investing in this holiday season is a fancy-pants automatic feeder for my kittehs <3
Let's be honest, they deserve better than a loveable owner that sleeps till 10am on Saturdays and misses their very serious 8am feeding time.. plus, I like to sleep in without kitteh nose in my face. Much as I love kitteh nose..The gadget I've been DYING for, but could OMGNEVEREVENTHINKABOUTITLAURANO! ..a FitBit. I know, I KNOW! They aren't that expensive, really, but it seems like such a totally luxury item.. this tiny thing that tracks and contrapulates your sleep habits, how often you walk in a day, how much the stairs REALLY burns vs the elevator :) it's amazing, and I love it.
Amy commented on Dec 15 11 at 8:00 amMy 10 year old would love a realistic flight simulator but of course takes almost a whole computer to run it! Which is exactly why we can’t get it and why we need to win a new computer!!
Becky commented on Dec 15 11 at 8:40 amLast year my husband gave me a Wii. Now, it’s mostly just used for Netflix. I debated asking for a Kindle, but I love paper pages so much that I just couldn’t do it! This year, I’m not really wanting anything “tech-y” unless you count a new blender!!
Allyssa commented on Dec 15 11 at 8:47 amI do NOT want a kindle. I like reading actual books. Apparently, that makes me a fuddy-duddy. I’m 35 in 5 days, so maybe I am a fuddy-duddy, but I still like reading a book I can hold in my hand, dog-ear the page (if I own it), troll through the library’s selections if I want. I also do NOT want an IPad, IPhone, or any other touch-screen technology. I find touch-screens annoying. They are so imprecise (I think that’s a word)…I have skinny fingers, so I don’t think its me, its definitely them. My hubby and parents are all gung-ho for the Apple icon, but I don’t want it. If Blackberry goes under, I’m so screwed. And I totally agree about the gaming system. I think the Wii or Kinect would be awesome in some ways, but I’m not there yet. I figure as long as we can put it off (I have 2 boys with a Xbox 360-obsessed husband–its inevitable), I’m doing good.
Stacy commented on Dec 15 11 at 10:20 amI think I want a Kindle. I really love actual books but they just seem so awesome!
Meghan O'C commented on Dec 15 11 at 10:35 amI’ll be joining you in the sound machine purchase. We tried using an old iPod with speakers, but it didn’t really work out. It was an old iPold, so you had to position it just so on the speakers to get it work. A big pain in the rear. With a new baby on the way any day now, I think white noise is in order for everyone. Yeah, sleep!
Jen M commented on Dec 15 11 at 11:00 amI’ve considered a LeapPad for our 4 year old, but can’t imagine it getting more use or be a better value than simply sharing my iPad. I’m not sure the fact that we could both be on pads simultaneously is actually a bonus. However, I’m thinking white-noise machine. Trying to get said 4 year old to spend the whole night in her own room might be easier if she wasn’t so often awoken by normal city noises from the street.
Mandy commented on Dec 15 11 at 11:46 amI have a 3D equipped TV, and my BF and I have tried I think 3 times to watch somthing on it in 3D, and have yet to successfully watch anything in full. Usually we turn it off and continue with it in normal 2D, the 3D is just not worth it. Besides, I wear glasses, so its super awkward looking putting the 3D glasses over top of my normal glasses. Nerd Alert!
Raia commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:40 pmMy husband is in the market for a new computer this year. He has lovingly cared for his 9 year old PC but is coming to the conclusion that it might be time to upgrade. He dabbles in video for fun and would *love* to be able to edit the HD footage his camera can take of our 14 month old daughter, among other things.
As far as cell phones for kids, I hear you, it’s crazy out there. I was a camp counselor maybe 9 years ago and one of my kids had a cell phone (to camp!) and I didn’t own one at the time! I did consider getting my daughter, who is facinated by my iPhone, a wooden one for teething : ).
Lauren commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:41 pmI went completely low tech this christmas and bought everyone clothes, and even BOOKS. real (not a)live books with pages. for turning. and smelling. NOT kindles or nooks or tablets.
I did buy my little sister a watch…that’s as close to tech gifts as I got this year. :)
Laura commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:42 pmWe really want to buy an iPad but have two functional laptops so can’t justify it. Oh well. Maybe someday.
Liz commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:43 pmI love that gramophone!
Amy P. commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:45 pmI agree! I’m not a techy person except for a computer and ipod. I don’t even carry a cell phone – just a track phone when we have a sitter! So I don’t want to buy my kid a bunch of techy things that will be ancient in 6 months and/or broken. Everyone and their dog has some kind of video game machine so I’m just gonna send him over to THEIR house to play! Techy play dates here we come!!
Briana commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:46 pmI will never purchase a Kindle, not the tablet, but the reader. There is something in the experience of opening a book. The smell of fresh paper and ink. Its a tangible experience and its not the same on a small electronic screen. I want my kids to grow up surrounded by books. Learn to share by lending them to others and knowing they can dive into a magical world where they can escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life…and technology.
Kathy commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:48 pmI admire your strength on the Wii and cell phones. This was a rough year financially, so my kids are getting much less. I’m pretty sure they won’t know or care, but I do. I am hoping that they just get into the spirit and enjoy the people around them. Having a 13-year-old and twin 5-year-olds, the varying necessities (electronics, functional items) is just crazy!
Erin commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:49 pmI realize some people may think I’m crazy for saying this, but I still cannot wrap my head around the iPad. I mean, I have an iPhone and I have a laptop. Isn’t the iPad a little redundant?? Plus, no one that I know who has one has been able to give me a reason to want one and they seem to all pretty much agree with me. So that is one tech item I will be staying away from.
Cynthia commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:49 pmi wish i could justify splurging on photoshop, but i don’t have a blog that i need it for!
beth commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:50 pmI will never purchase a kindle, nook, ereader, whatever. I like the feel of a book in my hands, and curling up with a kindle just doesn’t seem possible.
I would like a new computer, I am currently using a 6 year old, hand-me-down laptop. Though ipod speakers would be nice too…
leeshka commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:50 pmI’d loooove to get a new camera. My husband spilled a full glass of tea on my beauty and *poof*, little Canon Elph has died. Loved that thing, too. Unfortunately, I’m thinking that it’ll be a couple of years before we can afford a new one.
constance blizzard commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:51 pmNo tech here either– we’re woods-dwellers whose only power comes from a generator and a battery bank. That said, a nice pair of speakers sure would be nice. Do speakers count? Even if they’re old speakers plugged into a record player? Of, you know, records? Vinyl ones?
Fabs commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:51 pmOur daughter accidentally threw the Wii remote into our newish (two years old) flat screen TV on Thanksgiving day. While I would like to get a new tv, my husband is still upset about the whole thing and not ready to go there yet. However, we are going to get a Kindle Fire for our daughter for Christmas and maybe a canon powershot for our son. thanks for the giveaway!
duchessbelle commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:51 pmI also saw the ipod gramophone and must find a way to own it. Hilarious.
Lindsay commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:52 pmI think this is the first year I’m not purchasing a bunch of tech things (last year there were ipods and computers aplenty). I’m kind of a big tech toy person though so I can’t even come up with some kind of tech item I probably wouldn’t buy eventually.
Lauren commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:54 pmI’ve hinted around that I’d like an e-reader for Christmas. I work in publishing and am a major book nerd, and have really drug my feet on the whole thing. I love books! Not books on a screen. Yet… finally… that day has come. I carry a book (or two!) with me everywhere and that sure would be a lot easier if all my books were in one small place. Here’s hoping!
Jaci Arnone commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:54 pmI am an avid reader, as is my oldest son (14). He’s always buried in a book!
I said I NEVER would, but I actually bought him a Kindle. Ugh! I dug my heels in b/c I worry about the demise of the printed word (yes, I know I sound crazy)…but, my son will be thrilled with the Kindle.
My 9 yr old is begging for a phone & my 7 year old twins want pretty much anything that’s marketed with an “i” in front of it. Sorry kiddos, not going to happen!
Sara Peschel commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:57 pmPhotoshop! You won’t regret it.
Erin commented on Dec 15 11 at 12:59 pmPhotoshop is on my Christmas list too along with a digital drawing tablet so I can make more art without taking up do much space!
Lillian commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:00 pmPicked up a LeapPad for my 4 year old. I’d love anything that started with an i.
Erin commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:00 pmA new laptop please, Santa Dearest!
Rochelle commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:00 pmWe love the Wii. And this year we’re getting a Kinect! I can’t wait!!!
Nicole commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:03 pmI’d love to get a tablet computer but it’s just not in our budget this year. My kids love grandmas.
Leanne M commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:03 pmI’d love an ipad but just cannot justify it given the plethora of other computers, iphones and other tech gadgets I have. Ditto Kinect/XBox. I have a wii, infrequently used, but somehow I sooo want the dancing thing for Kinect. Cannot justify. I’ve asked for a used guitar. Going to take some lessons, teach myself.
Bethany commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:06 pmI’d love a DSLR, but otherwise I try to stay pretty tech-minimal. Though I am typing this on my six-year-old creaky desktop, so a new computer would be pretty spectacular as well.
Cynthia commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:06 pmI’ll be steering clear of the whole ginormous flatscreen TV’s just because I’m not an overt fan of TV so my old-school set will do just fine. But I would love, love, did I say love, to have an iPad or Kindle this year. I’ve just gotten back into the reading world again and would love to have something to organize reading material rather than have stacks of books in my floors!
Misty commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:06 pmNeed iPhone 4S! The camera on that thing is amazing!!!
Krystal commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:06 pmI’m buying my kids and husband the Kinect for xbox. Never thought I would but after seeing my daughter shake her booty at a friend’s to some of the dance games I just had to get it.
Rachel L commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:07 pmNo gadgets on the list this year. Just Batman stuff for my three-year-old daughter, and boring stuff for my husband!
Whitney commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:08 pmI would LOVE a kinect, I know how fun they are because eveyone else has one except for me but thats ok, because if I get a game console then I’ll need a bigger tv, a bigger house to hold the new tv, etc… a vicious downward spiral!
Stephen commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:12 pmMy wife needs to upgrade from her old school cell phone to a smart phone! The time has come! :)
Claire commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:13 pmI’m starting to hanker after a new TV…like a fancy flatscreen one that streams Netflix and Hulu. Want!
Jamila commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:19 pmGot an Ipad this year for work travel and have to admit I love it. Otherwise, pretty low tech around here so I don’t even know what I don’t want since I probably don’t know that it exists.
Kim commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:22 pmLove technology. And, I love to give it. We bought my parents an iPad for all they’ve done for us this year. I know they’ll love it.
GingerB commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:23 pmIpad Ipad Ipad and I don’t even know why I want it but I am sure I will be reading your blog and Babble using that fancy schmany Ipad! And um, maybe it will do other cool stuff as well as let me surf the net, for example, it may be used with apps that are occupational therapy for my daughter with CP. Here’s hoping!
Tammie commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:26 pmOk, I still have a flip phone (yeah, I know a bit of a dinosaur) so a newer phone is going on my Christmas list this year. And then, maybe, I will be a part of the app age!
Candace commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:29 pmActually we aren’t big gift for the kids type people. They are 3 and 1, and really have no clue about what christmas is about. So the gparents are getting them a few things and we are refraining because it won’t be long before the long ass lists of crappity, crap come to call! Not a bahumbug but our teeny, tiny apartment cannot hold anything else except maybe a Dell computer!
Jillian commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:34 pmI’m so tempted by an XBox…but it would be foolish.
sarah commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:34 pmi, too, freaking love white christmas. i watch it every christmas eve but have already watched it twice this year. my sister and i used to parade around the house as little girls singing the sisters, sisters song. it’s one of my FAVORITE things in the world.
i would freaking love the computer so that my husband and i can stop fighting over our one laptop. and go you on the #1 mom blogger. you deserve it. been reading you/loving you since before i had my daughter who is almost 2. you helped me through some shit. for realz.
Warrior Woman commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:35 pmEvery year my kids ask Santa for a DS and every year Santa decides that is just a little outside of his price range. Fortunately, Santa can afford something a little more reasonable like a touch-screen mp3 player with camera/camcorder (under $50). Trying to explain why Santa can’t just whip these things up in his workshop is a whole other story.
sizzle commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:40 pmThose speakers are amazing. They are now going on my wishlist. Oh yes! We treated ourselves to new iPhones for Christmas. I’m pretty sure I’ll never talk face-to-face with my boyfriend again unless it is through Words with Friends or Face Time (I kid, kinda).
krista commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:40 pmi saw the gramophone dock as well. my heart stopped a bit. on our wish list: ipads. covet covet covet. we’re on a bit of budget this year. it’s called “handmade with love. and pennies.” we’re embracing the struggle. (thank god our kids are young enough to embrace it as well without too much awareness of its necessity.) so ipads are out of the question. other than that, we aren’t too tech-y. however, my mom’s computer died so i would love to win this one for her. *happy holidays to you and your family, my not-even-close-to-in-real-life friend.*
ste commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:41 pmOur family is fairly low tech. I just finished setting up our new 37″ TV – which replaced an old 27″ tube TV. I can actually watch without squinting! That’s the only tech we plan on buying.
One tech thing I can’t see myself buying is a Wii. I never had gaming systems growing up and I’m not sure I will ever think I need one.
jan commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:42 pmMaybe a new DVD player?
Courtney commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:45 pmI’ll confess that the thought did cross my mind of buying the 16 mo old a toy laptop computer given that he covets ours so. But then I came back to my senses and put the toy laptop on the never-or-at-least-not-for-several-more-long-years list!
Nicole Francois commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:45 pmMust. Have. Gramaphone. ipod dock!
Emily commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:51 pmI finally broke down and bought my husband a kinect for Christmas. He was all excited about how the kids can pet tigers, throw balls for them and make them sit and I all I could think about is how they should be doing that for our two dogs asleep on the couch…
Jessica K commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:52 pmI love the IPod speakers-how retro! I’ve recently become a fan of the retro phone handsets that can hook up to your IPhone. Since we don’t have a landline and I’m permanently attached to that silly invention, I’ve decided I want one with a base to sit on my desk or a super old school one, think early phone era. On the downside receiving one would mean people would have to phone me instead of texting…..
Kelly commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:55 pmi need new ear buds for my ipod, i plan on asking for them for christmas
Kristy commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:56 pmMy two boys, 14 and 11, are getting cheap Android tablets with keyboard cases. We have a Wii and it is the only game console I’ll allow, so all four kids together are getting Rockband for Wii.
Lauren commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:56 pman iPad from my mother, the voracious reader and an iPhone 4S for moi!
Stacy commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:57 pmI’m thinking about getting some kind of dock for my IPhone.
Robyn commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:57 pmMy two oldest children (10 and 7) have been begging my husband and I for an ipod touch. We told them that if they REALLY want one, it will be the ONLY gift they are getting! Ok..not ONLY, but pretty close. We broke down and bought them each one. They are going to FREAK out!! We wrapped them in huge boxes to throw them off! Can’t wait to see their faces on Christmas morning!
Jennifer commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:58 pmI would looooove a new smart tv and a million other toys, but me thinks the boyfriend’s going the engagement ring route instead OMG :)
Jessica McGraw commented on Dec 15 11 at 1:59 pmI would really like a new Tablet that we can use both educationally and to use a portable entertainment center for our kidlet.
Alison commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:00 pmI would like an ipad or kindle fire this year.
MrsBagley commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:06 pmAfter my laptop took a crap last night, a new computer is on my list!
Andrea commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:06 pmIf I had the money, I would purchase my husband a fancy surround sound system that he has his eye on. I have an iPad on my list and also a DLSR camera but until we win the lottery, things like that are too expensive for Christmas gifts.
My youngest son (7) wants an iPad and my older son (9) wants a laptop. My oldest is getting his wish because we were able to get a nice used laptop for a great price but my youngest is getting another nice item on his list. I just feel that 7 is far too young to have an iPad but maybe I’m too old-fashioned.
Leah B commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:09 pmI would love a new computer this year, ours is dying a slow death and it makes me a little sad. Other than that if we had the dough in the budget my husband would be getting an ipad. I am trying to steer clear of tech things for my little one, at least for a while.
Rachel commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:09 pmWe need a dock for our ipod…something simple but will last through the toddler years…the current one was drowned in fingerpaint.
And what will I avoid like the plague. A smart phone. I know people love them but I just dn’t like being connected like that. When I’m not online I don’t want to be…online.
Alexandria commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:11 pmI’m steering clear of kindles/other tech that is made specifically for books, because I loooove having shelves full of actual books! I also love holding a real life book in my hands! So, although it’s a neat idea, having tons of books on yet another tech device doesn’t sound as fun as having tons of books I can actually see and hold.
Bekah Huffman commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:13 pmWe have a wii… my son loves it so much, but I wish didn’t have it!! He would play 24 hours a day if I let him!
Cara commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:24 pmWould love a new Iphone and a Kindle. Getting youngest daughter her own camera and older daughter a bunch of girlie items so she can look and feel pretty. Thanks for all you do Rebecca – love your blogs.
Courtney commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:27 pmA computer! I’m technology-free at the moment so it’s time.
Lien commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:34 pmI want a tablet. Still debating whether I want to splurge and get an Ipad or a “cheaper” version.
Emily commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:34 pmWe are a tech-friendly family but really try to limit the time we spend with our gadgets. Thanks for your great blogs!
Kristie commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:34 pmI’d love to have a non-work laptop to play games on…and to Pinterest my 8 million interests. : )
Joanna commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:36 pmWe want to get an ipad! And… a blu-ray, a new receiver, and new speakers… :-)
Jenn Co. commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:37 pmWe’re looking at an old-school Atari 2600 on eBay. Yes, really. Because even almost 30 years later, Frogger and SuperBreakout, I can’t quit you.
Pattie commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:40 pmI’m pretty much set as far as tech I “need,” so I would love a fantastic point-and-shoot digital camera that’s small, shoots video, and that I can just toss in my purse and go. I love my digital SLR, but it’s a commitment to lug it around.
Melissa commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:41 pmI hear you on the no phones thing. Mine are 12 and 10 and have been asking for a cell phone for a couple of years. “But all of our friends have one” is the current argument. Their friends are also dropped off at the mall without an adult. Sorry, guess I’ll be old school for now. At least I’m not the only one though. :)
jamey commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:44 pmYou have no idea how much a new Dell would save me right now! Mine just decided that its on its last legs during finals week. BTW I love apps but I’m stuck in the early 2000′s without a smart phone. Silyl me.<3
El commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:47 pmI Got my current computer (a Dell) in 2003, so we really need a new one.
Lisa Boshell commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:52 pmWe’re not getting any new technology this year, but I really want a Kindle.
Nicole commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:54 pmOur Tv died recently so sadly a new tv. Wish it was a ipad or kindle fire
julie commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:54 pmWe are very low-tech here. My mother-in-law found some old Nintendo somethings and she is going to look for some games that are appropriate for my 7 and 4 year olds, but I doubt they will be a big hit.
Other than that, I delay tech purchases because I feel the longer I wait, the better and cheaper the products get. Late adapter.
Thanks for the contest!
Barbara commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:55 pmNo new technology this year, but I would love a Kindle or an iPad.
Emily commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:55 pmHappy Holidays to you and your beautiful family! I would love to win and give the dell to my hard working deserving Mom!
Megan commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:56 pmI’d love a new ipod – mine is outdated and finicky – and some speakers for it. I’m steering clear of anything that requires batteries and can’t be recharged by plugging it in. I never seem to have the right size batteries when I need them.
Rosa commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:57 pmI REALLY want a new desktop. Currently just using my laptop and the hard drive space is taken over by pictures of my children because let’s be honest, I am a photo hoarder. NO SHAME! ;) Those SLR’s RAW images take up so much!!! I’d LOVE to upgrade my Canon-SLR but that is definitely definitely definitely not happening. ;) You should get photoshop! PSE is really cheap and somewhat easy to figure out.
Debbie in Memphis commented on Dec 15 11 at 2:59 pmOur techy gift would be getting our TV fixed…I miss TV
Donna commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:05 pmI constantly feel like I’m “behind the times” on the world of tech. I don’t do Twitter, I don’t own an iPod, no laptop, I’m sure I don’t know how to do tons of stuff on the computer…..I barely even know how to blog and keep a website. I limit my kids on everything; TV, computer, video games. I’d prefer them to play outside and make real life friends.
I love those speakers you posted, those look so awesome!
Jacqueline commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:05 pmThey might even already have one but I don’t know about it. I would like some sort of master grocery list and maybe a way to apply it to the layout of a grocery store. How many times do I have to go back to get stuff I forgot? And I do have a list but if it’s not on the list in the first place that won’t help much.
Roobacca commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:07 pmI am coveting the new iPhone. For my brother- and sister-in-law, we bought a snazzy new coffee maker, which is one of the most important pieces of equipment in their house (and ours).
Mary Thompson commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:08 pmI have to say that I am really looking forward to the Kindle Fire this christmas. I am a traditionalist and love my paper books, however while on vacation this year I read about 5 books and lugging them all around in the airport while traveling was a task. I never thought that I would be into an e-reader, but maybe … just maybe I will turn over a new leaf!
Jenny G commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:11 pmNothing high tech this year – new baby, little strapped for cash. Hence entering this contest ;-)
Michelle commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:14 pmI did buy my daughter a leap pad. She will be very happy about that. But I would really like to buy an XBOX 360 with the Connect option. I think that I would love the dancing games!!!!
abbeyviolet commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:16 pmWe did buy a Leapster game for the kid and Wii games for hubby, but no NO kids cell phones til I don’t know when?
Brenna commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:18 pmI’m rooting for a Nook for me and a Leappad for the kiddos.
Come on’ Santa!
Leah commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:23 pmThat speaker is awesome. But glad its not available since it would do serious damage for me too!
mommaruthsays commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:26 pmDo you know how much this would *make* our Christmas? For almost a year now, my husband and I have been squaking back and forth about getting a new computer. This one totes fits the bill PUH-LEASE!!
Emily commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:28 pmNo tech items on my list. I struggle with the tech issue. I have an iPhone and 3 Mac computers but no tv or video games. While I spend my days in front of a computer, I want to keep that reality away from my 4-year-old for as long as I can. She needs time to be a kid.
Andrea commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:30 pmI’d really love a Kinect with Dance Central 3 – I’ve been excusing my way out of exercising for too long, and I think the fun way is the best way.
orsolya commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:31 pmi am speechless… mr random, please pick me, pick me!
Ana Brightful commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:35 pmThe hubs wanted an appleTV for Christmas. I’d love an iPad but it is not in the cards anytime soon and I’m really okay with it.
katalia commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:37 pmI can’t live without my sound machine for adults. It’s the best thing my mom has ever given me and still going strong after 8 years of nightly use.
My kids are going to be Luddites (when we have them) … we have gadgets, but no TV, and I’m against a lot of techy toys for my offspring. The toys I grew up with fostered so much more creativity! It’s blocks, and puzzles and dress-up boxes … with a bit of technology thrown in for well-roundedness.
Kalyn commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:39 pmWe love our Wii…but I’m not sure we really use it often enough for it to be worth the money we spent.
Cassie commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:45 pmI would LOVE an iPhone or an iPad, but really I’d be thrilled with a new iPod. I don’t understand the 3D things – they just give me headaches!
Jinxi commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:50 pmI’m not sure if this counts as a “tech” item, but I would love one of the computerized sewing machines.
Kate commented on Dec 15 11 at 3:52 pmOh, I totally want a new lap top. Mine is so aged–the fan is broken, so I have to point a little fan at it or it’ll shut off after 5 minutes. It’s missing keys (but only “T” and “y”, you know, nothing that I use ALL THE TIME) and I can’t actually move it anywhere…sigh. It does, technically, still work…
JEN commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:08 pmI’m to poor to afford tech gifts
AFitz commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:11 pmLaptop – this dinosaur has no C or ALT keys,no battery, and weighs a ton!
Chrissy commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:12 pmWe got a gaming console. Our first one since my old Nintendo. And yes, am excited about it. Not a bit apologetic, either.
Allie commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:14 pmA tablet! Bought it for myself as an early present last week and it’s already here. Loving it.
Anne commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:26 pmi think an iPad would be awesome, but is not even close to being in the budget this year.
Kendra commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:28 pmI would LOVE an appy called “where did I hide it?’……So when I buy something in June for the following Christmas I will be able to FIND it at Christmas and NOT the following June. Also….It should hide itself (from prying techy children) and automatically pop up December 1.
Love the column!
Ashley Archuleta commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:32 pmI would live an iMac :0) but who wouldnt right… For now my wish list involves a new laptop (wink wink) or a new battery for my old heap… :0/… Merry Christmas!
cathryn commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:33 pmI think I would love an iPad, but I am waiting as we have more important things to do this year!
Jill commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:36 pmEver since my husband and I became Mennonites gift-giving has been a snap. We give the kids new covers for their Bibles depicting awesome scenes from the book of Revelation (three-headed monsters! Death as a skeleton riding on a pale horse!) They’re also getting hand-cranked radios so they can listen to music while doing the morning chores.
Cheryl commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:42 pmAs stupid as this sounds, I would love to have a flat screen t.v. so my ultra heavy t.v. can go bye bye. Until I get that flat screen t.v., I will not buy a gaming console thought I would love the Wii Fit.
Lilly commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:46 pmI’m going to get an alarm clock/ speakers for my ipod in wood from the MOMA store. It warms up the whole technology thing with the wood and it’s almost as cool as though retro Restoration Hardware ones! My dream is a new computer…
Mike commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:49 pmA new laptop would be pretty great. We don’t really need anything super techie, but a sofa would be great. Ours is old and from the sidewalk.
Barb @ getupandplay commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:51 pmUgh, I too dislike 3D. It gives me a headache!
I wouldn’t mind a new phone for Christmas, though!
Tami in NY commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:52 pmIs a vacuum cleaner considered ‘tech”? I need a new one bad!!!
Rachel commented on Dec 15 11 at 4:52 pmI am in LOVE with the ipod speakers…..so steampunk!
Jen Jorgensen commented on Dec 15 11 at 5:02 pmAlthough my kids BEG all the time to play on the ipad, we are not going tech this year for our kids. They are still too little (4 and 2), so they are getting a cash register with a real scanner and a shopping cart with play food.
Lindsey commented on Dec 15 11 at 5:02 pmI reeeeally want a fitbit (http://www.fitbit.com/) and put it literally at the top of my list. Hopefully my family got the message…
Kristina commented on Dec 15 11 at 5:13 pmThe tech gadget I’d love to get – a new computer/laptop. Totally agree with the NO CELL PHONE FOR 8 year olds. We survived without them…
KathrynD. commented on Dec 15 11 at 5:36 pmMy hubby already gave me my new iPhone. Not so much because I coveted it, but because he knew my current phone likes to turn off on it’s own & he thought it important I should be able to call him for something important. You know, like…I have a splinter and can’t get it out, or the kids are driving me nuts :)
treebrick commented on Dec 15 11 at 5:43 pmI intentionally went no tech with gifts for my 14 year old and 10 year old this year…they need to spend more time being mentally engaged, not amused.
Erica commented on Dec 15 11 at 5:44 pmI would really like to get my fiance a smartphone with gps capabilities. He calls me at least once a week asking me how to get home, and then gets mad if/when I don’t pick up. Alas, on our 2-grad-student income, not in the cards this year.
Deborah commented on Dec 15 11 at 5:44 pmAll things hands on are under our tree this year. Kids earned a kinect selling popcorn and that is awesome but I really wanted to go with building toys/kits. For me….just a houseful of smiles and nothing to clean :)
elizabeth commented on Dec 15 11 at 6:02 pmthe tech gadget I’ve had my eye on is a Garmin forerunner GPS watch/heart rate monitor, because I just started running!
Jan commented on Dec 15 11 at 6:04 pmI got a nice 3/4 micro camera- inbetween point and shoot and SLR- so I can photograph a baby on the way! I feel so techy. I would love to keep all noise making light flashing toys out of my future few years- lets see if that happens.
Liz commented on Dec 15 11 at 6:04 pmI’m hoping for a kindle, myself. Not exactly gadgetry, but I will also be purchasing a cd box set as an mp3 as a gift for my husband which I have somehow not done until now.
mary commented on Dec 15 11 at 6:08 pmmy mom needs a computer! i would pick a canon d5
Stephanie commented on Dec 15 11 at 6:12 pmI hate to admit it, but I would sort of love a Kindle!
Lauren commented on Dec 15 11 at 6:16 pmMetallica rulez!
TLR commented on Dec 15 11 at 6:16 pmWe just ordered cable after 17 years with 5 to 7 channels and I’m already rethinking it. Our reception is definitely improved but I can see it becoming a mind-numbing activity. So that’s enought “tech” for us!
Thanks for the contest!
Maggie E. commented on Dec 15 11 at 6:20 pmSeriously considering an iPad, but first I have to admit to myself that it’s only because I desperately WANT one, and in no way do I NEED it!
dgm commented on Dec 15 11 at 6:21 pmMy hubs would like to get me a Kindle because it is in his interest that I no longer have books spilling out from the all the bookshelves in our house, but I sooooooo do not want a Kindle. I need to touch my books, fondle and smell them. Hold them like I’ve never held them before.
Good on ya for not getting Archer a cell phone at 8. We only just got one for our daughter because she has to take the train to her high school (about 30 miles away), and she’s there all day long. She was the last of her friends to get a phone, but she’s totally cool with that. We also don’t have TV, so she’s used to being the odd one out!
Melody commented on Dec 15 11 at 6:35 pmMy five-year old laptop is gradually biting the dust, so a new laptop would be tops on my list. But now that my library has begun its ebook program, I would also love a Kindle Fire!
Abigail commented on Dec 15 11 at 6:39 pmMy second MacBook is on the fritz and my loads of photos are not helping the cause!!!
Maggie commented on Dec 15 11 at 6:44 pmI love your blogs! And am in serious need of a computer :(

Heather commented on Dec 15 11 at 7:22 pmWe wanted an iPad, but we’re getting a Kindle Fire this Christmas instead.
Kristen commented on Dec 15 11 at 7:28 pmI hear you on tha board game vs. Video game dilemma……I have been trying to decide for the last two years if I am ready to give up my books for an e-reader!
Katrina J commented on Dec 15 11 at 7:45 pmA new laptop for my boyfriend. His is dying a slow death.
Philippa commented on Dec 15 11 at 7:54 pmNo gadgets for us, but my mother-in-law would be over the moon if she received her first-ever computer for Christmas! I want my kids to have a tech-savvy, Skyping grammy!
Kylene commented on Dec 15 11 at 8:23 pmAn iPad and iPhones are at the top of our lists! :)
Alicia commented on Dec 15 11 at 8:27 pmMy never in a million years tech piece would be a baby tablet. I personally think its kind of crazy, especially when I know people who buy Ipads or other tablets FOR the baby/toddler. Not an Ipad they let the baby play with occasionally, but the babies OWN Ipad. It horrifies me. Sorry. But awesome giveaway! LOL
S commented on Dec 15 11 at 8:28 pmwe try to balance it, video games and board games, i’d love a new computer but will stay clear off an e-reader, love books and love to give books….
Meredith Morgans commented on Dec 15 11 at 8:51 pmI was not a video game kid, and I’m not a video game mom. I just don’t get ‘em…but I do love learning games on the computer. The kids think they’re playing, but I know they’re learning. Finally a win, win!
Linley commented on Dec 15 11 at 8:53 pmHaha, at first I didn’t see that you had the cell phones under a not-wish list. I was like “Nooo! Becca, what happened?!” Also, yay for board games instead of Wiis!! At this point, I’m hoping for a GPS for Christmas. It’s probable because as it is, I am totally dependent on my father’s (re: I’ve held it hostage since I started driving), and I think my parents are fully aware that they might never see me again if I am not equipped with one when I leave for college next year. As in, I will end up lost somewhere in Kansas.
Myssiw commented on Dec 15 11 at 9:06 pmWe totally bought our 6yo a Nintendo DS.
My husband and I have been talking about this gift choice since the summer!! So, we decided to go for it, but first I put a screen time earning system in place.
Rebekah commented on Dec 15 11 at 9:09 pmHoping for a Kindle this year…though I’ll definitely have to share it with my sweet husband!
Catherine commented on Dec 15 11 at 9:22 pmI’d like to get a touch screen piece of tech-goodness for my parents. They have a Dell Inspiron laptop from 2003…
Meredith commented on Dec 15 11 at 9:32 pmI’m going to buy my dad an Xbox so he can play a great car game!
Danielle commented on Dec 15 11 at 9:36 pmi’d love a new laptop and a router to access netflix on my tv..other than that i’m pretty much useless with tech gadgets!
Millie commented on Dec 15 11 at 9:39 pmA smartphone for my dad…although I don’t think he’d ever use it besides to play Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja (the DVD player still confuses him) but at least he’ll stop complaining when we won’t share our games with him.
wumples commented on Dec 15 11 at 9:44 pmI’m still on my first iPod, and my laptop is still hanging in there… but I desperately need a new digital camera. My boyfriend has sweetly let his camera live in my purse sometimes, but it isn’t the same! It’s also an outdoor camera, so it leaves something to be desired when taking indoor photos.
Tina C. commented on Dec 15 11 at 9:53 pmOn my wishlist is a new computer. I’ve got a 7 or 8-year old laptop which is dying. What I’ll actually get is a kindle. I’m finally making the jump to ebooks…kinda. there are still books by authors that I know I’ll buy paper copies of, but my budget says either I stop reading as many new(er) releases (and buy all my books second-hand – which isn’t that bad, as I tend to buy a good 85% of my books secondhand) or go with ebooks which tend to be cheaper.
Natalie commented on Dec 15 11 at 10:03 pmI am a sucker for technology but I really resist letting my babies get into it (they’re 11 months). I may relent on a 6.5 hour flight next week though…
Nina R commented on Dec 15 11 at 10:20 pmMy techie wishlist consists of an iPad and/or just a newcomputer to replace the one currently knocking at death’s door!
Kristin Cannon commented on Dec 15 11 at 10:25 pmMy wish list would include:
Those frickin awesome speakers from Anthro, a little point and shoot…need a happy medium between SLR & iPhone (1st world problem), an ipod dock for my daughters room, & a new computer.
colby commented on Dec 15 11 at 10:32 pmafter my husband’s ipad2 purchase this year, i feel like we may never make another tech purchase again. at least not for a few more months :)
Marie commented on Dec 15 11 at 10:33 pmI would also really love a new phone with a better camera — mine doesn’t have flash so I’m screwed if it’s nighttime, or if the daytime light just isn’t strong enough.
chandra commented on Dec 15 11 at 10:47 pmAgreed on the cellphones for kids and game consoles – no need for either of them. We will be buying a cheapo iHome speaker for the iPod to bring in the car because our 1 yr old is very picky about his tunes these days and apparently needs 800+ options to choose from. :)
jen commented on Dec 15 11 at 10:55 pmiPad, baby–bring it!!
Caelan commented on Dec 15 11 at 11:12 pmI want an iPad but know in my heart of hearts that I don’t need it. So I’ll wait another few years until they’re only a hundred bucks or so and get one then!
Donna Y commented on Dec 15 11 at 11:31 pmI’m pining for a Kindle Fire. :)
LBN commented on Dec 15 11 at 11:43 pmi’d love some speakers for the kiddo’s bedroom – i want to be able to drift off to sleep while listening to good music. i’ll be staying away from the 3d tvs…i love me some tv but i just don’t get it…
Amanda May commented on Dec 15 11 at 11:55 pmI’d like a smartphone, though I don’t really need another way to be internet-ed. And on my un-wish list, the video games. I like having an xbox when its used to stream netflix, but the video games put me in furies.
Ashlie commented on Dec 16 11 at 12:46 amI really wanted a Kindle for Christmas last year, because I’m obsessed with books. Well, I got one, and I love it, but nothing beats paper pages.
This year I would LOVE a Nikon DSLR camera, but they’re all expensive. I could never ask for one without feeling super guilty.
Jennifer commented on Dec 16 11 at 12:59 amI am very interested in the Kindle. I love reading, and love the e-ink display on the non-Fire Kindles, so would love to get one. (Totally with you on the not having cell phones for kids. Having one at 8 is insane!)
Beth commented on Dec 16 11 at 1:01 amI was never allowed to have video games as a kid and I am happy my parents made that decision! I played at my friends’ houses and that was enough.
As far as tech gadgets go for me… I just got the new iPhone 4S so I think my budget has been exceeded for 1 year! But our laptop just bit the dust so Santa may have to scrounge up some loose change.
Eryn commented on Dec 16 11 at 1:04 amI’m seeing a lot of parents buying VERY young kids (3-5 years old) tablet PCs this year. I’m steering WELL CLEAR of giving anything that costs more than my first car to a preschooler.
Laura commented on Dec 16 11 at 1:07 amI’m caving and asking Santa for an iPad this year. I spent months saying “no” and “they’re stupid” and “I’ll never need one.” Then I started playing with a friend’s and realized that they are actually quite cool and fairly useful. Plus it’s easier to play Angry Birds on the bigger screen.
cassie commented on Dec 16 11 at 1:20 amWe bought each of our 4 kids an android tablet for Christmas. However, we opted for inexpensive off-brands because, seriously, they are kids, and sooner or later (probably sooner) will destroy them.
Kamber commented on Dec 16 11 at 1:58 amI would love a speaker for my iphone. Preferably something Hello Kitty that also sounds good. Probably an impossible task. Never in a million years will I be buying is a 3D tv (sorry Rebecca.) I also agree on the no phones for kids. They are only 4 and 2 right now and would love an iPhone. But no way Jose!
Lizzie commented on Dec 16 11 at 2:16 amDoes my $100 itunes card count? We needed some new tunes and apps for our 1 and a half year old daughter! Who by the way already has an iphone, but don’t worry, it’s my old one. She uses it for an ipod, angry birds and putting in her mouth *an expensive teether!! :)
K Foxman commented on Dec 16 11 at 2:59 amI love all these tech gadgets, but so easily could live without them. When the kiddos come, I hope I have as much resolve as you to keep them away as long as we can. This year I’m DIY-ing all my nieces’ and nephews’ gifts – our house is covered in felt! :)
Mia commented on Dec 16 11 at 3:05 amI don’t know about steering clear of any one particular thing, but I really want a Nook!!
Caroline commented on Dec 16 11 at 3:48 amDefinitely an IPad!
Kat commented on Dec 16 11 at 4:12 amI’d like to get the Music game for the Wii — yes, that game console none of us have used in over three months *ahem* — because we played it (is it called Wii Music?) with our friends’ kids (awesome kids, btw) and it challenged even my trained ears. It would be great for my kids and I imagine us all challenging each other to hear and play and conduct. As for my own wish, a portable digital camera is #1 but unlikely because I ‘have’ a good camera and saved a pretty penny for it, too. But it clunks against my chest and doesn’t tuck away easily and I’m afraid to hurt it, etc. etc. I just want a point-and-shoot. Family wish is a new computer because, somehow, a 6-year-old Dell just isn’t really cutting it anymore and I have too many pictures and not enough memory to do video editing. None at all. Gotta preserve these family memories and these cute little faces!
Kat commented on Dec 16 11 at 4:16 amOh yeah, what I’ll never get. An iPad. Not because they’re not awesome and useful and wonderful and magical, but precisely because I WANT one. I will never buy one because I would become totally engrossed in it and, being compulsively busy on computer-related stuff, would neglect other good things in life in order to play on it. So it PAINS me to say “no” to something so cool, but on the other hand, I’m learning a Schubert piece that my mom once said was “too hard” for me. Booyah!
P.S. Santa please send me some good workout music!
Chantel commented on Dec 16 11 at 6:44 amOn my wish list are an iPod Touch, an iPad and a new van. Oh, and someone to come run a Cat5 cable through the wall, across the attic and through another wall so that I can stream movies on the livingroom television. On my not-so-wish list is video games, since my husband loses himself in them for days and/or the kids obsess about them for 0.0004 seconds before discarding them.
tawna commented on Dec 16 11 at 6:55 amTechnology….it’s creeped into our lives and seems a necessity now. Granted, I do go college online..thus my need for a computer of some sort my husband so he will stop stealing mine!!!
Leslie commented on Dec 16 11 at 7:22 amI agree on the cell phone issue for kids. I have friends that bought them for their kids when they hit kindergarten but I never really understood that one. A definite no for this household. Wow I think that makes me sound so old!
Cassie commented on Dec 16 11 at 7:49 amHere’s hoping the tech fairy picks me!
C Goostree commented on Dec 16 11 at 7:59 amGetting the little one an iTouch. I think that will be the only electronic of the xmas season.
Tricky commented on Dec 16 11 at 8:50 amI dream about going anti-tech and getting the family a record player. It’s what we need fo living room dance jams I think…
Dana commented on Dec 16 11 at 8:55 amYeah, I also wonder who the 8 year olds are talking to… go PLAY!
mcconk commented on Dec 16 11 at 9:06 amWe recently (finally) finished our basement. We have a new TV down there, but NO STEREO or Ipod dock or any way to have tunes at all. I would love some sort of speakers or dock!!
Nina commented on Dec 16 11 at 9:17 ama much needed backup of any kind for my laptop. before this old thing crashes and i loose the last two years of pics of my little ones. *-*
Nicole commented on Dec 16 11 at 9:18 amSometimes I feel like we are so surrounded by technology we don’t have anything else and it becomes all “must haves”.
Virginia commented on Dec 16 11 at 9:28 amI will be buying a new iPhone at some point. And I would love to get apple tv. I also just found out i was pregnant, so we need to think about getting a camera so I can talk to my Mom over skype.
:)
Natalie commented on Dec 16 11 at 9:35 amAlthough I am awed by technology, I find myself lagging behind compared to everyone else. That’s okay with me now, until my 5-year-old daughter starts to pass me by, I suppose. : )
Eileen commented on Dec 16 11 at 9:37 amHoping for an iPad, but a new TV or new and lighter laptop would be great.
Charla commented on Dec 16 11 at 9:41 amThere is a beautiful coach bag that is on my dream Christmas list. With a 6 month old at home it’s not happening this year!
Lindsay commented on Dec 16 11 at 9:51 amI would love an ipad!
sweet commented on Dec 16 11 at 10:12 amI’m with you — love the ipod speakers, have said En Oh so far to video consoles, cell phones or ipods for kids, and 3-d glasses.
Carolyn S. commented on Dec 16 11 at 10:13 amI want a Kindle touch. I have an older Kindle that I love and use every day, but I have problems with my hands (chronic repetitive stress injuries in both arms) and while having a Kindle makes it easier for me to read as much as I like, having a touchscreen device would be even better.
Lizzy K commented on Dec 16 11 at 10:14 amMy tech wish is for new bud earphones for my office computer & my MP3 player. My hell-no-never tech item is the 3D TV. Utterly ridiculous (although I imagine my grandmother said that about TVs in general)
oona b commented on Dec 16 11 at 10:37 amI am currently coveting this ipod dock from Urban Outfitters that looks like an old radio/alarm clock, but since I already have a “Squeezebox”, cue Aerosmith references, I guess I don’t really need it. Maybe I will find a rad case for my Android in my stocking, something a little less boring and utilitarian?
Kerewin commented on Dec 16 11 at 11:00 amLove reading about you and your family! Happy Holidays <3
Holly K commented on Dec 16 11 at 11:11 amMy father-in-law has a 3D TV, so the kids can use his. I hope to keep our house 3D-free for as long as possible (hubby will inevitably have TV envy…)
lynnie commented on Dec 16 11 at 11:17 amI know I probably won’t get it but I would die if I got a NIKON SLR CAMERA
Lynn! commented on Dec 16 11 at 11:19 amI know I probably won’t get it but I would die if I got a NIKON SLR CAMERA
Rachel G commented on Dec 16 11 at 11:23 amI’m suddenly addicted to my iphone that my cousin handed down to me… and I swore never, never to let my kids get into video games (my husband is – I think they are super lame and the worst time suck ever; but who am I to judge). So, cut to last tuesday when the twins and I need a shower and the 4 yr old asks if he can play ‘angry birds’ on my ‘purple phone’. How does he even know what ‘angry birds’ are? But. I let him.
Alison commented on Dec 16 11 at 11:33 amNo technology for me this year. Books for everyone! Although I wouldn’t mind if they all gave me books for my Kindle…
Dorothy G commented on Dec 16 11 at 11:51 amDoes a brand new DLSR count? I’ve been using mine HARD since we bought it in 2009, and I think I’m ready to move on. Just need some cash to rain on me in the meantime!
kerrieg4 commented on Dec 16 11 at 11:51 amWants- the new iphone, i know so cliche and so Oct 2011
Do not want but tempted to want- Ear piece for my phone, it would be so convienent but do i really want to be that walking-around-talking-and-no-one-knows-if-you-are-talking-to-them-or-not-because-you-have-an-earpiece-in-your-ear-girl??? no thank you!
Jean commented on Dec 16 11 at 11:52 amI’d love an iPad. lovelovelovelovelovelove. Also, a Kindle.
What I need is a proper laptop instead of this little netbook.
Christy Thrifty Vintage Kitten.com commented on Dec 16 11 at 11:57 amThere will be no buying of super fancy techy things this Christmas. Maybe next year! Someday I’d love to have an IPAD of some kind to help with my vintage business. I’d love to be able to do more work away from my home office :)
Petey commented on Dec 16 11 at 12:00 pmI’ll be purchasing 2 iPod touches and a Leapster. I’m a little surprised at myself for buying the 2 iPod touches – but now maybe my iPhone won’t be hijacked the minute I walk in the door at night.
Rachel commented on Dec 16 11 at 12:31 pmI’d love an iPad! Also, and I don’t know if this counts as tech or not, but since it’s a gadget I’d LOOOVE a clarisonic cleansing system!
Grace Miller commented on Dec 16 11 at 12:33 pmI’d love to win!
Bethany commented on Dec 16 11 at 12:47 pmWe just now have our first kiddo on the way, but it amazes me how my niece and nephew have way better technology than me…wii, ipod touch, kindle fire, etc.
I just want an ipad!!!
Alison commented on Dec 16 11 at 12:58 pmAs a woman who has moved VERY slowly into the tech gadget arena, I am now lusting after the ipad and kindles I see everyone using. Just wonder if it will actually add value or be one more time suck in my life…
Robin commented on Dec 16 11 at 1:21 pmWant (ok, already got): a Kindle. My old sony reader died and I am smitten by the new Kindle!
Do not want: I am with you on video games – family board game night sounds so much sweeter!
Megan commented on Dec 16 11 at 1:25 pmNo electronics on my list this year — or on my “to purchase” list either!
Jackie commented on Dec 16 11 at 1:31 pmI would love to have one of those color e-readers, but with money tight, I might have to stick with the paperback exchange. Maybe next year, Happy Holidays all!
Abby commented on Dec 16 11 at 1:42 pmWe’re practically Luddites we have so few techie gadgets…but in my dream world, I’d love a Kindle Fire…and a new laptop (lordy, mine died in February and I can’t believe I’ve lived without one this long!).
Jill (mrschaos) commented on Dec 16 11 at 1:56 pmOur family is venturing into the Kindle Fire world this year. I’m kinda excited. I’m also excited for this chance. THANK YOU!!!
Debbie commented on Dec 16 11 at 2:02 pmAn Ipad would be on my list to Santa. Too bad it is not in the budget this year.
Theresa Landewe commented on Dec 16 11 at 2:33 pmI would love to get my husband and iPad or iTouch, but I think it’s still outside our budget at this point. I’m definitely steering clear of any gadgetry for my kids. I figure they’ll have plenty of time for that stuff when they get older. Until then, it’s just trash trucks and puzzles for them.
amanda c commented on Dec 16 11 at 2:34 pmIf they were available, and we had the money, we’d get a larger harddrive. Primarily for backing up all of our data (photos, mostly).
Helen Jane commented on Dec 16 11 at 2:56 pmI’d love a lens and my manfriend would love a Kinect. But we’re simple folk and instead, saving our pennies for babysitting ;)
April commented on Dec 16 11 at 2:59 pmMerry Christmas Rebecca! Love your blog!!!
Caroline commented on Dec 16 11 at 3:26 pmI’m hoping for a new GPS this year.
Janet commented on Dec 16 11 at 3:41 pmmy 2 year old is getting a VTech laptop (fake)
I have been playing with it and it is pretty cool!
Tatiana commented on Dec 16 11 at 4:11 pmI’d love a new nano.
tessa f commented on Dec 16 11 at 4:20 pmI’m really hoping Santa will be bringing me a new cell phone, a smart phone at that would be very nice!
Heather Morris commented on Dec 16 11 at 4:29 pmWell the only techish gift under the tree is a roku which I am pretty excited about. A new computer under the tree is my dream but since I live in the land of reality I will not get my hopes up. I hope that you and your family have a great holiday!!!
chad seys commented on Dec 16 11 at 4:40 pmi’d like to have any kind of tablet computer for the kitchen to read online recipes and stream music. Even older ones would work for this purpose. So far, Santa hasn’t been good to me though. :)
Jeremy Stephens commented on Dec 16 11 at 4:54 pmCool tech gadgets are not in the budget this year, but I would like to get the Kindle Fire for my wife.
jocelyn commented on Dec 16 11 at 5:44 pmMy 4 year old asked Santa for an IPad. I had to tell Santa no way. We got the new Sonic and Mario Summer Olympic game for the Wii. Living in the Chicagoland area the Wii is a god sent in January and February when it is to cold to go outside, and both of my boys will work up a real sweat playing it.
Sean commented on Dec 16 11 at 6:56 pmIf the price suddenly dropped by about $200, I’d really love to get an iPad. (Happy holidays!)
keely commented on Dec 16 11 at 8:05 pmI really want a kindle fire, but I told my husband even a regular old kindle will do. However, he is of the belief that if we all start reading on e-readers books will become obsolete and books are so beautiful and warm and smell good, but I think they are really heavy and difficult to hold when trying to nurse a baby…so if I get one I will apparently be buying it for myself!
NP commented on Dec 16 11 at 8:32 pmomg I *LOVE* those speakers!
Milly commented on Dec 16 11 at 9:01 pmI’d love to get an iPad.
Eliza commented on Dec 16 11 at 9:10 pmI still have the same alarm clock from when I was in high school. Its pretty much broken. A new alarm clock would be nice, one that I can plug my ipod into maybe.
Erin S commented on Dec 16 11 at 9:24 pmMy laptop’s delete key is broken, which is making me feel an inordinate amount of pressure to be perfect. It’s crazy-making and will have to be addressed before I toss the darn thing out the window.
Bryn commented on Dec 16 11 at 9:24 pmWe purchased the Kinect sensor for our rarely-used Xbox this year. And I will be steering clear (though only becuse of price) of the iPad, while drooling/lusting over it from afar.
Michelle commented on Dec 16 11 at 10:05 pmI’m scared of the price of the iPad, but I WANT
melanie commented on Dec 16 11 at 10:24 pmWe play board games more than our Wii, too, but it is pretty fun to have when you first get it – we did a lot of fun family bowling time then.
rajee commented on Dec 16 11 at 11:43 pmI agree with you Love iPad
Natalie commented on Dec 17 11 at 12:54 amUm, Bec? I love you! You are just like me, except infinitytimes cooler. Thanks for being a mom-spiration. Been reading your blog daily for who knows how long now and I always look forward to your insightful, funny, memorable posts.
Kristen Biehl commented on Dec 17 11 at 11:55 amMy husband and I indulged in our tech-lovely gift a little early this year, but it is our gift to each other for Christmas. We wanted a digital SLR camera- we picked out the Canon 60D-we are in love.
Lynn D commented on Dec 29 11 at 10:43 pmGot an iPad and love it. Don’t own a laptop, just a four year old desktop,so this is strange and wonderful.
