Girl's Day Out at Old Navy

Her closet is full of shirts, tunics, and dresses that have never been worn.  Ella, my four-year-old daughter, is going on 16 and is particular about her fashion choices.  To say the least.

Not only does she have definite ideas about what to wear, she is a tomboy through and through, preferring tractors over Tinkerbell and Superman over Snow White.  Her favorite accessories are SpongeBob band-aids instead of hair bows or jewelry. I love this about her, I do, her individuality and independence.  Of course this individuality and independence are not the most welcomed aspects of her personality on school mornings when I JUST WANT HER TO GET DRESSED ALREADY.

I’ve learned to stop buying clothes for her, picking up a shirt or jeans here and there that I think are cute, because I know those clothes are destined to hang unworn in her closet until it’s time to put them in the Goodwill box.  Luckily for me, this girl LOVES to shop for clothes.  With fall quickly approaching and temperatures hopefully dropping soon, Ella is in desperate need of clothes to replace last year’s wardrobe that consists of jeans with holes in the knees and mustard and mud stained knit shirts.

On one of her days off from preschool, she and I spent a girls day together shopping at Old Navy.

As an aside, Ella has recently been going through a difficult stage.  By “difficult,” I mean that her behavior has nearly broken me on more than one occasion.  Before shopping, I told her in my happiest, most sing songiest voice that she WOULD act like the sweet little girl that I knew she could be or I was taking all of her monster trucks away.  Honestly, I was pretty sure that this shopping trip wasn’t going to end well, but Ella surprised me.

While walking into Old Navy, she even said, “Well, Mommy!  We can’t just get me clothes!  We have to pick out stuff for Carson, too.”  My heart then exploded at her selflessness in wanting to include her brother.  It almost made me forget her atrocious behavior these past few weeks.  Well, not really.  I’m still scarred.

So!  Shopping!  It was fun! And messy! I’m happy (and frankly relieved) that the shopping trip went as well as it did and that no monster trucks or fragile psyches were lost in the process.

I need this one, too!

Our shopping trip began by Ella basically taking over the entire children’s section of Old Navy.

“Look at this!”

“I need this one, too, Mom!”

“Ooh!  Butterflies!”

“Superman PJs, Mom!” Silent Gasp. “And Batman, too!”

“This is just my size!”  (It wasn’t, it was a 6-12 month ruffled butterfly skirt.)

“It’s time to find Carson’s clothes now.”

Clothes were unfolded and taken off the racks faster than I could follow after her in my attempts to reign her in and help her to focus on getting actual outfits.  Eventually I helped her choose two shirts and two pairs of jeans for Carson, and two shirts, a pair of jeans, a pair of pajamas, tights, and a dress for herself!  A dress!  A dress!!

This post is brought to you by Old Navy. Check out the Kids & Baby Sale in store with great deals starting at $5.  I was kindly given $150 to shop and shop we did!  Check out our haul!

She's really wearing a dress! I was shocked when she chose this pink dress with blue butterflies from Old Navy. She even accessorizes with her SpongeBob band-aids.
